CARE & The Fight Against Global Poverty CARE was founded in 1945 to provide relief to survivors of World War II In 2009, CARE supported more than 800 poverty- fighting projects in 72 countries to reach more than 59 million people. • Strengthening capacity for self-help • Providing economic opportunity • Delivering relief in emergencies • Influencing policy decisions at all levels • Addressing discrimination in all its forms

  3. CARE’s Strategy to Combat Poverty CARE places special focus on working alongside poor women because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty. • Mothers Matter • Power Within • Access Africa

  4. CARE’s Work in the U.S. CARE has 66,000 supporters throughout the State of California • Partner with local groups to raise awareness • Host local events • Grow number of supporters, including young people • Meet with members of Congress in-district

CARE’s Youth Outreach CARE works to inform and engage students in the fight against global poverty by working through partners and directly with student leaders around the country Partners: Americans for Informed Democracy, Global Kids, Global Nomads Group, FACE AIDS, YouthNoise CARE Student Leaders: High school and college students from around the country who address global poverty issues on their campuses Campaigns: Climate change, violence against women, basic education

What is global poverty? 1.4 billion people live on less than $1 a day “Poverty is deprivation of common necessities that determine the quality of life, including food, clothing, shelter and safe drinking water, and may also include the deprivation of opportunities to learn, to obtain better employment to escape poverty, and/or to enjoy the respect of fellow citizens.”

State of the World’s Girls Women and girls represent 70% of the world’s poorest people • Generally less educated, less healthy, and less free than their male peers • Face disadvantages related to health, education, labor force participation, and the burden of household chores • Forced to marry at very young ages and are vulnerable to diseases (like HIV) and violence • Seen as unworthy of investment or protection by their families • Little voice to demand their rights
