Role of V21 Coordinator • Act as “extra counselor” or case manager. • Work with student/family to develop 4 year plan with yearly updates. • Aware of interests/goals in order to inform of various opportunities. • Offer variety of academic activities/competitions throughout year. • Help with schedule changes.

  7. Why double up in Math? Just because it is an option does not mean it is necessary for all! Doubling up on Math 1X and Math 2X will allow students with EXPLORE score but not in advanced math to take HPS. (5 this year) We have 1 section of Linear Algebra, which follows AP Calc BC. There are some studentswho would like to get to this class by senior year so doubling up might be necessary and it is hard to do sophomore year with AP Euro. If starting 9th grade in Math 2X, 1 year of doubling up would be necessary. If you are starting 9th grade in Math 3X or beyond, there is not any need to double up. Colleges DO NOT want you to go your senior year without a math class.

  8. Honors Physical Science REQUIRED PREREQUISITES: Math 2X AND a score of 23 or higher on EXPLORE science. Have the EXPLORE score but not in advanced math? Summer test-out option or double up in Math. In advanced math but do not have the required EXPLORE score? Summer test-in option. If you are missing either prerequisite for HPS, you must register for Physical Science. Changes will be made in August if testing is successful.

  10. Honors Physical Science Test In This class does not lead to different science class options in future years nor is it required for any future AP classes. The summer assessment is designed to measure science aptitude and test mathematical reasoning and science problem solving. There are not any curricular materials or textbooks to prepare for the test-in process. It is an ability-based exam and not a test of content knowledge. If a student who has tested into Honors Physical Science is unable to keep up with material from the next level within the first week of the new course, the student may need to drop back a level. Be aware that scheduling and class sizes can make this process difficult.

Regular vs. Honors Civics • 9th grade reading level • 20-40 min. homework • 2-3 formal research papers • Content suited for 9th grade with most emphasis on understanding and comprehension. • 12th grade reading level • 1-2 hours homework • 5-6 formal research papers • Content suited for 12th grade with most emphasis on in-depth analysis and application. (Understanding and comprehension is assumed). Neither class is a prerequisite for AP European History.

Comm 9 vs. Honors Comm 9 • Emphasis on knowledge, comprehension & application. • Informative speech • 20-40 min. homework/night • 100 min. indep. reading/week • Short story unit – 7 stories • Modified vocab roots series • Approx. 2 major essays with guidance. • Emphasis on analysis, evaluation & synthesis. • Persuasive speech • 45-90 min. homework/night • 150 min. indep. reading/week • Short story unit – 9 stories • Full vocab roots series • Approx. 4 major essays with less guidance. Neither class is a prerequisite for future AP classes.

Based on Class of 2017 of 848 students Current 9th grade class – Class of 2017 165 students in 1 Honors class 125 students in 2 Honors classes 85 students in 3 Honors classes 63 students in 4+ Honors classes 438 of the 848 freshmen in at least one honors class. (~52%)

Skyward Scheduling Requests If student is eligible for a class that is not available on Skyward (ex., AP Calc), student should give worksheet to middle-level V21 coordinator, who will forward them to me. I will enter the courses you can’t access, if appropriate. If a student is doubling up on math in order to meet pre-requisites for Honors Physical Science, student should give worksheet to middle-level V21 coordinator, who will forward them to me. I will hand schedule your classes to make sure Math 1X is in 1st semester and Math 2X & HPS are in 2nd semester.
