  3. Jen Stark -artist who uses colorful paper and many cuts to create a paper relief sculpture (video).

  4. Frank Stella • Began as a painter & slowly his artwork became 3-Dimensional • Creates smaller relief sculptures that sometimes become large scale public sculptures.

  5. Abstract • Recognizable forms that have been changed from realty

  6. Negative Space • The empty spaces inside and around an object or shape

  7. Collage: a design created by attaching mostly flat elements (newspaper, wallpaper, text, photos etc) to a surface.

  8. Contrast: • a principle of art; strong differences within an artwork to create interest • Examples: opposite colors, geometric vs. organic shapes, big or small etc

  9. Elizabeth Murray • Chicago born artist • Uses flat, painted shapes pieced together • Artwork is often playful, cartoonish and bold in color • Uses images objects found in the home to emphasize her ideas about domestic life

  14. Your Project • You will be making a paper relief sculpture that utilizes collage (magazines, drawing & painting) • The sculpture will be about someone you care about (this can be yourself!). It can be abstract. • “Emphasize” an area in your sculpture • Use “negative space” (everything shouldn’t be jumbled together) • Thoughtful and organized “composition” using some overlapping
