Priorities for integration Global Photo removed National Sub-national COMMUNITIES 1. Focus on families 2. Work at all levels 3. Agree on common nutrition goals & 4. Work towards them using our strengths
Different actors can act towards a common goal if commitment, ownership & capacity are there Other sectors Agric. sector Others Common nutrition goals Nutrition related actions Health sector NGOs UN agencies The most important question is HOW CAN WE DO IT?
How can we focus on needs of families? Photo removed • Plan from bottom-up to the extent possible • Recognize that different countries and districts within countries have different needs and generate different demands • Stay goal-focused 1. Focus on families
How can we work at all levels, and at scale? (1) • Plan actions through levels so that the focus is on getting what s needed to families in a coordinated fashion • Partner widely so that burden of implementation is shared
How can we work at all levels, and at scale? (2) • Recognize that integration does not mean everyone “doing same thing” or “doing everything” • Do what each group does best in coordinated fashion • Build strategic alliances • Harmonize donors and agencies, at global and national level
How do we agree on common goals and work together? • Recognize this is about people, who need to be motivated to take right decisions and actions • Recognize that facilitation and coordination are needed, and that they take time and cost (a little) money
How do we build widespread commitment and ownership? • Engage national & global leaders • Engage wider development community • Foster country focal groups and learning teams who work together • Increase sustainability and commitment towards nutrition by building regional initiatives
What capacities are needed? • Advocacy • Political savviness • Comprehensive world view of nutrition • Program planning and design capacity • Communication • Ability to trust others & let go of our self-interests (a little)
“It is about personal relations” • Know each other • Communicate with each other • Trust each other • Commit to each other towards common goal • Assume co-responsibility toward common goal Andres Botran, Guatemala,
Next steps • Develop set of case studies from past and on-going experiences in countries and from regions • Provide framework and model approaches for catalyzing and building convergence and commitment in countries and regions
Next steps (contd.) • Hold working session within six months to • Develop typology of integration efforts • Define necessary actions & capacities for integration at different levels • Global (donors, technical community) • Regional • National • Sub-national/provincial • Community • Discuss key countries to begin “proof of concept” work
We need to work through some issues… • Self-interest that interferes with creation of common space • Appetite for “show-and-tell” that detracts from collaborative environment • Tendency to blame others • Fear of engaging with others (especially private sector)
People want to • Belong • Participate • Be recognized Guatemala, Andres Botran
