  1. Macbeth Day 3 (February 27) • Take a card as you come in. These will be your groups later • Get out your journal and your book. • Have your doodads, legos, or whatever you brought out on your desk so I can give you credit for homework • We will listen to a recording of 1.1 and 1.2 • As you listen, think about the following • Where does this battle take place? • What is the weather like? • What is Duncan like?

  2. Shoe Box Staging • As a group you will be staging 1.2. Please move to be with your group.

  3. Shoe Box Staging • Identify a setting. You need to be true to the spirit of the text, but you don’t have to set the play in Scotland. You can also change the time period. • Now, as you reread the scene, use your markers to decide how each actor moves.

  4. Assignment: Shoe Box Staging • 1. Who stands closest to Duncan? Why? • 2. Do any characters touch? Who? Why? • 3. In what direction does the Captain exit (after line 48) and from where do Ross and Angus enter (after line 38)? • How does the scene end? How do the characters exit? Together, separately? Who leads? Why?

  5. We will now watch 1.1-1.2 • How do these compare with how you staged the scene?

  6. Denotation and Connotation Assignment (in your journal): Create a list of synonyms for each of the following: thin, woman, man Even if each of your synonyms has the same denotation (dictionary definition) they may each have a different connotation (implied meaning). What are the connotations of each of your synonyms?

  7. Journal assignment continued • “So foul and fair a day I have not seen.” • Rewrite at least 4 times using synonyms for foul and fair. • How does using different words affect the meaning?

  8. Non verbal communication • How the players act affects how we interpret their characters and their words. • Example: Duncan with the soldier • Now, with a partner or two, create a short (10 seconds) skit in which you demonstrate non-verbal communication.
