Amendment 2 • Protects the right to possess firearms • A well regulated militia for security of states • The right of people to keep and bear arms
Amendment 3 • Declares that gov’t may not require people to house soldiers during peacetime. • Owners must give consent • Nor in a time of war • Only if a law is created
Amendment 4 • Protects against illegal searches and seizures • Must obtain a warrant • Must be probable cause • Must be specific
Amendment 5 • Guaranteed life, liberty and property • Land can not be taken without just compensation (Eminent Domain)
Amendment 5 • Rights can’t be taken away without due process of law • Can’t be tried twice for same crime (double Jeopardy) • Do not have to be witness against oneself
Amendment 6 • Criminal proceedings • Right to trial by jury in criminal cases • Right to a speedy and public trial • Right to defend oneself by seeking council and witnesses
Amendment 7 • Civil Trials (Person Vs. Person) • Right to a trial by jury in most civil cases • Controversy must be more than $20.00
Amendment 8No cruel and unusual punishments • Punishment for crimes • Prohibits excessive bails, fines and punishment
Amendments 9 & 10Protection of other rights • 9-Declares that rights not mentioned in the Constitution belong to the people • 10-Declares that powers not given to the national government belong to the states or to the people.
