An SJS Craft journey to the Moon Navigation Through Space
Date and Time • Date leaving- Tuesday May 5th • Leaving time- Around the time of 4:00 P.M. • Date of Arrival- Saturday May 9th • Time of Arrival- Around the time of 4:00 P.M. • Part of moon we are landing on- North Pole • Duration of Journey- About 4 days. • Return date to Earth- Thursday May 14th
Navigation Instruments: • Sextant- is a navigational instrument for measuring the angle between objects. • Timepiece- A timepiece is a device to measure time. • Star Chart- To navigate to the moon with star navigation. • Star Tracker- is a navigational device which measures the positions of stars. • Gyroscope- is a device used for maintaining or measuring our position. • A rocket- A rocket with stability and control functions is the most important. • Astrocompass- is an instrument that locates true north. It is not affected by stray magnetic fields. • Simplified Aid For EVA Rescue (SAFER) - SAFER is a basically a “life jacket” for space walks. It “relies on small nitrogen-jet thrusters, to let an astronaut move around in space.”
Description of route and orbital paths When we leave Earth it would be 3 days after the Waxing Gibbous moon begins. It will take us 4 days to reach the North Pole of the moon. By that time it will be a Full Moon, and the North Pole of the moon would be facing earth. By that time we would have land on the moon at 4:00 P.M. that evening on earth.
Methods of control and tracking We would be using the sextant, to see how far we are from the moon. The time piece to measure how much time passed. A star chart and a star tracker to help us locate stars and their positions. The Gyroscope to help maintain or measure our position in space. We will use our astrocompass,to help us find our way from North and South if we are not sure which way we are going.
Methods of guidance and navigation We have to use a gyroscope and connect it to a GSN to control the flaps. Also you need to use a star tracker. This is used to take pictures of stars and compares them to the stars in the data base. This shows where you are in relation to other stars.
Essential Supplies needed for safety • Food/Water- Extra food and water is a must to stay alive on your voyage. • Oxygen reserves- You need oxygen reserves to survive in space. • Fuel- An adequate amount of fuel during your voyage is essential.
Supplies needed for us • Durable suit- A spacesuit with radiation shielding is important to keep you safe on your voyage. • Map or space route- will be needed to have a visual of where we are going. • A way to contact Earth- If something goes wrong you need to contact someone who can send help.
