An essay is like a hamburger…. Introduction Main body Conclusion A hamburger needs both parts of the bun and the burger otherwise it’s not a proper hamburger. An essay needs an introduction, main body of argument and a conclusion otherwise it’s not a proper essay.
How to write an 8 mark essay • It needs to have an: • INTRODUCTION – Set the context and state what you will mention in the main body. • MAIN BODY – A clear line of argument that develops points of recall to help answer the question. • CONCLUSION – make an overall judgement and briefly summarise your main arguments.
How is it marked? • Up to 6 marks for relevant points of KU (recall) • Up to 2 marks for structure – having an introduction, main body and conclusion.

PLAN • Intro – context = WWI 1914-1918, new methods of warfare used to break the stalemate of trench warfare, other factors also played a part in the Allied victory such as German home front. • Main body - Tanks, Gas, portable machine guns, use of aircraft, use of motor vehicles, dreadnought, naval blockade, developments in artillery, other factors such as declining morale on German home front, US entering the war. • Conclusion – ‘In conclusion, the use of new technology ....... Three types of gas were used in battle; mustard, chlorine and phosgene gas. The gas was released either in canisters using the wind direction or fired in gas shells towards the enemy. Gas was a terrifying weapon that killed around 90,000 soldiers during WWI but the invention of the gas mask limited its effectiveness.
