Volunteer Services Mission Statement • New Hanover Health Network Volunteer Services Department will seek to provide quality supplemental services, consistent with current needs and available resources.
History • In June of 1967 New Hanover Regional Medical center first opened. • Today the hospital has 855 beds, and has specialized centers for cardiac, cancer, obstetrics, trauma, vascular surgery, intensive care, rehabilitation, and psychiatry. • In 2001, the Zimmer Center, a free standing cancer center opened. And in 2003 it was names a National Teaching Hospital Program.
Healing Arts Network • The Healing Arts Network is a group of certified therapists who come in and work along side the staff to help patients. • Therapists work to help patients manage their pain, learn new coping skills, and possibly aid them in relaxation. • Therapies used consist of expressive therapy, therapeutic touch, dance/movement therapy, music therapy, massage therapy, yoga, pet therapy, craniosacral therapy. • There are also other services that come in on Maureen’s request such as a hair dresser. • The Healing Arts Network keeps bookson cd and cds for patients to listen to that may help keep them calm. Also they just get what the patient needs and help the nurses with what they can.
Art Therapy at The Oaks • Each group focuses on different issues, which are very apparent once sitting in on the groups. • In both groups I’ve been to you must participate along with the patients to make them feel more comfortable and to ease possible paranoia they may have. • The Behavioral Unit art therapy groups focus mostly on working in groups together, communication is a target area. These groups are expressing feelings as well as learning how to get along with each other which will come in use once they are released from the hospital. • The Dual Unit focuses mainly on expressing feelings because most of them have turned to drugs or unhealthy means to subside the pain.
My Role at New Hanover • Visit with patients on 8 South/ Oncology and suggest treatments that Maureen has arranged for the floor that week. • Sit in on art therapy groups for the Behavioral and Dual Unit at The Oaks. • Work the front desk at the Zimmer Center. • Sign in patients and direct them to the correct area for their treatment.
