  1. 27.Estuary Ecosystems • EQ: What are the different aquatic ecosystems? Why are they so important to life on Earth? • LT: I can identify various aquatic ecosystems (such as estuary, wetlands and oceans) & their important features. • POU: I will show my understanding of how water moves from river basins to the ocean by creating a detailed drawing of its features. • I will make food chain connections in aquatic ecosystems

  2. Welcome! It’s Thursday 3/6/14 Today’s Warm-Up: • How are Estuaries like nurseries? • Write everything you know about food webs • Go to goo.gl/vta7d1 to enter your response

  3. Table of Contents 1 Title Assignment # Water Properties Webquest 8 Water Cycle Brainpop 9 Water Cycle Vocabulary 10 Water on Earth Notes 11 River Basin Notes 12 River Basin Vocab 13 River Basin Scavenger Hunt 14 Estuaries Notes 15 Wetlands 16 Diagram River Basin to Estuary 17 Wetlands and Estuaries Vocab 18 Estuary Ecosystems 19

  4. Diagram River Basin to Estuary 17 Use Vocab: River Basin Watershed Tributary Wetland Estuary Ocean

  5. Wetlands and Estuaries Vocab 18 Wetland -An area where the water table is at, near or above the land surface long enough during the year to support adapted plant growth Estuary - is a body of water, partially enclosed by land, where fresh water from a river mixes with salt water from the ocean. Brackish - partly fresh and partly salty. Marine - lives in the ocean Aquatic – lives in the water Other words of importance: Nursery Erosion Salt Marsh Mangrove Forest Biodiversity Sediment Pollutant Nutrients Pesticides

  6. Let’s look at some of the organisms that can be found in a estuary in Washington state • “click on the different organisms” • http://padillabay.gov/popups/EstuaryPoster.htm

  7. Estuary Ecosystems 19 8th Grade Science

  8. Estuary Ecosystems 19 Ecosystem- A community of living organism and their interrelated physical and chemical environment

  9. Food chains • Plants and animals must have energy to survive, grow and reproduce. The energy in the sunlight can be directly used by plants, while animals get their energy from food. Food chains are simple ways to visualize how energy flows in an ecosystem. EX: phytoplankton  shrimp  flounder

  10. Food Chain / Trophic Levels Vocab • Trophic Level is a particular position occupied by a group of organisms in a food chain • Primary Producers (plants) – converts sunlight into energy that can be used by other organisms • Primary consumer - are plant eaters. They may also feed on other primary consumers. • Secondary consumers (eat plant and animals) - eat primary consumers and they also feed on plants • Tertiary consumers are top predators that eat secondary consumers. These consumers are at the top of the food chain.

  11. Food Chain Activity Use SAFARI to go to my website at www.stoffregen.wikispaces.com Download 27.FoodChains.key – then open in KEYNOTE

  12. Aquatic Ecosystems • You are your table partner are going to research the words in the word bank. • Figure out what row the plants and animals belong in. • Insert a picture of the plant or animals next to the word. • Insert lines between the items to make simple chains.

  13. What’s for lunch or dinner? Create your own food chain based on a recent meal. Label each item in the meal, diagram where the food item comes from Label the different trophic levels
