Explore signal degradation over distances in different scenarios indoors and outdoors with TelosB Motes. Measurements conducted include flat table surface, concrete floor, and mote positioning effects to increase signal range. Experiments in different environments revealed insights on signal strength variations. The tests also involved concrete and outdoor settings to examine signal reach. Additionally, mote hopping techniques were employed to extend the range of communication between the motes. The experiments led to findings that provide valuable insights into signal strength and range optimization for wireless devices.

What We Did • Measure signal degradation over distance in various situations: • On flat table surface (Indoors) • Through concrete floor (indoors) • On concrete floor (outdoor) • See whether another mote could be used in between router/mote to increase signal range.
Test 1: Indoors / Table • We moved remote fixed distance away from router on same horizontal plane, measuring signal strength at each distance.
Test 2: Outdoor • We tried to see whether positioning the router & mote (horizontal or vertical) would affect signal strength.
Test 3: Through Concrete • We tested to see if ‘ping’ still worked through a thick concrete floor. • Problem: Couldn’t tell straight-line distance from router. 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=66 ttl=32 time=522 ms 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=67 ttl=32 time=56.0 ms 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=68 ttl=32 time=1287 ms 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=69 ttl=32 time=686 ms 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=70 ttl=32 time=50.5 ms 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=71 ttl=32 time=50.7 ms 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=72 ttl=32 time=101 ms 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=73 ttl=32 time=396 ms 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=74 ttl=32 time=57.7 ms 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=75 ttl=32 time=51.7 ms 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=76 ttl=32 time=50.3 ms 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=77 ttl=32 time=423 ms 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=78 ttl=32 time=2115 ms 64 bytes from 10.97.116.174: icmp_seq=80 ttl=32 time=41376 ms
Test 4: Mote Hopping • Tried to position motes so that one was in range of the router and one was only in range of the other mote. • Repeating the concrete test, it extended range by 17ft • Repeating the outdoor test, extended at least 15ft (we ran out of floorspace)
