The First Experiments Science Mr. Nye
Reaction Time Experiment • Goal: Discover if playing video games and/or sports increases a person’s reaction time. Share data between other groups. • Hypothesis: Make a prediction as it relates to the goal. • Results:Create a table to organize the reaction time for sports players, video game players, both video game and sports players, & for non-players of both video games & sports. • Reaction time will be measured in centimeters. • Average your results for each person. • Conclusion: Make a conclusion as it relates to the goal and back it up with evidence (data).
Fortune Fish Experiment • Goal: Determine what makes the fortune fish behave the way it does in your hand. • Hypothesis: What do you think makes the fish react in your hand? • Procedure/Results: Determine what tests you wish to perform on the fish (heat, no heat, lower temperatures, moisture- dry heat, wet heat, microwave). For your results, create a table with the tests you performed and how the fish reacted. • Conclusion: What actually made the fish react the way it did in your hand? Support your conclusion with evidence from the experiment.
Film Canister Submarine Experiment • Goal: Create a mini-submarine using a film canister, pennies, water, and alka-seltzer tablets (small pieces ONLY). • Hypothesis: Specifically, what will make the mini-submarine sink and then rise in the water? • Results: What did the mini-sub do (when it worked)? What combination and amounts of materials worked the best? • Conclusion: Why did the submarine sink and then rise? Hints- Where does the water go that was inside the film canister when it starts to rise, and how does this relate to density?
