Comparison of Proposed First Wall Experiments Jake Blanchard HAPL MWG Fusion Technology Institute University of Wisconsin e-meeting – June 2003
Goal • Assess the ability of various proposed experiments to mimic HAPL conditions • Ensure thorough documentation of HAPL exposure experiments
Preliminary Assessment of Exposure Experiments • UCSD Laser, XAPPER, Z, and RHEPP can all mimic surface thermostructural effects • Those which can provide an initial temperature of around 500 C will do better • Cooling the back of the sample is beneficial for multiple shot tests
Preliminary Assessment of Exposure Experiments • All these experiments produce peak temperatures faster than HAPL (tens of ns vs. a few microseconds) • The IR Experiment at ORNL will probably be best for testing W/steel interface issues (cracking, bond strength, etc.)
Archival Data for Experiments • We must take care to properly archive the results of exposure experiments • This will help to retain value of data as we learn new aspects of the failure and roughening mechanisms for the various materials
Proposed List of Data for Experiments • Target Material(s) • Material Identifier (Code) • Thermal conductivity • Heat Capacity • Density • Target Thickness • Target Surface Finish • Target Dimensions • Experiment Name • Energy Form • Energy Spectrum • Energy Deposition Profile • Number of Cycles • Pulse Width • Dwell Time • Heat Flux History • Fluence per Pulse
Proposed List of Data for Experiments • Chamber Environment • Mass Loss • Initial Target Temperature • Is the target cooled? How? • Estimated Temperature History • Measured Temperature History
What I Still Need? • Temperature simulation from each experiment • Rest of data for comparison table • Suggestions for experiment data sheet
