What Contributes to Terrorism? • With the person next to you, brainstorm and come up with the top 3 contributing factors of terrorism. • What causes terrorism?
Contributing Factors: Politics/Issues • TERRORISM IS A POLITICAL PHENOMENON!!! • Government actions / decisions / policies are not universally agreed upon • People within a country can oppose their government’s policies • People in any part of the world can oppose a foreign government’s actions/policies • Terrorists use violence or the threat of violence to enact political change
Contributing Factors: Socio-Economics • What conditions are likely to fuel terrorism? • Poverty/unemployment: • The poor and unemployed are not only likely to be upset with a government’s politics, they are more likely to join organizations that provide support, ‘employment,’ etc. • Demographics: • Countries with large, young populations (especially, large 17-30 year old, male populations) are more likely to have terrorist elements. Why?
