Enrich Transformations and Polynomials Instruction with Technology Using Geometer’s Sketchpad to Explore Transformational Geometry iLearn Grade 8 Math Session 8.2
Focusing Questions • What are other strategies of teaching transformational geometry? • How can Geometer’s Sketchpad support working with transformations?
Framing The Session • You have used the SmartBoard and virtual protractor to do transformations. Now, you will focus on using Geometer’s Sketchpad to accomplish this.
Teaching • Open to page 290, PS A, in “IMPACT.” • Together we will follow the steps in the handout “Steps to Modify a Premade GSP Sketch”to complete the Problem Set.
Guided Practice • Open Reflection.gsp. • Create instructions and questions for page 293 of “IMPACT Math” directly in Geometer’s Sketchpad using the text tool.
Getting Started • Working in small groups, explore the following sketches and discuss how they relate to the problem sets indicated.
Work Time How is the sketch related to the problem set? • Impact Math Chapter/Problem Set GSP Sketch • 5.1 PS C Reflect.gsp • 5.2 PS B Rotation symmetry.gsp • 5.2 PS E Rotate.gsp • 5.3 PS A Translate.gsp • 5.3 PS C ReflectIntersecting.gsp • 5.3 PS D Threeflect.gsp
Work Time (cont’d) How is the sketch related to the problem set? • Impact Math Chapter/Problem Set GSP Sketch • Lab Investigation Glide reflect tiling.gsp, Triangle tiles.gsp, Twisted triangles.gsp, Tumbling blocks.gsp • 5.5 PS B Coordinate Reflect.gsp • 5.5 PS D Coordinate Translate.gsp • Whole chapter RooBooGoo.gsp
Share • Let’s look at some of the questions and instructions you created.
