A View of Earth Chapter 1.2
The Earth is divided into three major spheres: 1. The Hydrosphere 2. The Atmosphere 3. The Geosphere The Fourth Sphere is the Biosphere The Biosphere interacts with the three spheres above and contains all life.
The Hydrosphere: As you know “hydro” means water. All of the water on earth is part of the hydrosphere. 97% of the hydrosphere is contained in the oceans. The other 3% is fresh water. It is important to maintain consistent patterns of salinity (saltiness) and temperature to maintain normal life in water.
The Atmosphere The atmosphere reaches 100 km (about 60 miles) above the Earth’s surface, but contains 90% of the air in the first 16 km (about 10 miles) The atmosphere protects us from harmful UV rays from the sun. It protects us from objects that fall from space. It holds all of the air we breathe.
The Geosphere: The geosphere is the area beneath the atmosphere and beneath the hydrosphere. It is not uniform. It is divided into three main parts: 1. The core 2. The mantle 3. The crust
The inner core is about 1220 km to the center. Roughly 750 miles. The outer core is 2260 km deep (about 1400 mi) The two mantles are about 3000 km deep (about 1860 miles)
Resting on the top of the upper mantle is the crust. The crust and upper mantle are sometimes called the lithosphere. The crust is between 5 -70 km (or just a few miles to about 40 miles deep)
