  1. Assignment 2, Research Report. Due November 4th.

  2. 1. Brief description according to unit guide: • Comparative Analysis of a country of your choice and Australia (1000 words) • The idea is to develop a country comparison in regards to a topic (one topic) we discussed in the lecture and/or tutorial.

  3. 2. Let’s talk about suitable topics. • An example: Malthus states that population growth has negative impacts as we exceed the natural resources. Now, you could see how this works out when comparing Australia with another country. • Let’s brainstorm and come up with a number of ideas.

  4. This is a list of possible topics the 11 am tutorial group came up with. This is the raw list based on brainstorming, without any editing by Charlotte. It is meant as inspiration.

  5. 3. The structure of the assignment: • Your research idea. For example: Malthus argument that population growth has negative impacts on the environment. Explain this concept in detail using lecture notes, reading, and other materials. Name and cite your sources! • Explain how you measure these concepts. For example, population growth – what is it? Environmental impact – how do measure it? Footprint for example. What is footprint? Name and cite your sources. • Describe Australia and your country of choice using the indicators you named above. • Discuss your findings. Does your two country comparison support your initial expectation? • References. Name all sources, and when referring to online sources, provide also the date of download.

  6. 4. Research strategy • Let’s brainstorm and do a quick search of the internet. Where would you look? • These are examples that the 12 noon tutorial group has compiled based on what they saw as suitable webpages: • Cia Fact book: societal wealth, unemployment rates, economy, demography. https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/ • Footprint network: http://www.footprintnetwork.org/ • World Values Survey: http://www.worldvaluessurvey.org/ (Attitudes and behaviors of people) • The Top 10 Sustainable Countries in the World www.carbopig.com • The United Nations National Facts www.un.org • www.abs.gov.au Australian statistics • www.UN.waterforlife.org • www.nrdc.org/globalwarming Natural Resources Defense Council • National site with official environmental data unstats.un.org/unsd/ENVIRONMENT/clinks/htm • www.oecd.org/statistics

  7. 5. A note on referencing • When copying diagrams from online sources, provide the source below the diagram/picture/table. • Referencing may seem boring, but it is important and poor referencing skills immediately attract the reader’s attention to your poor academic skills. Referencing is not difficult, but you may need to look up each of your sources to see how you do it correctly. See here: http://libguides.jcu.edu.au/referencing. If you are familiar with a specific style, use it. If not, consider APA or Harvard.
