Foundation and Federation Partnerships The AVI CHAI Foundation
AVI CHAI Mission Statement • To encourage those of the Jewish faith towards greater commitment to Jewish observance and lifestyle by increasing their understanding, appreciation and practice of Jewish traditions, customs and laws. • To encourage mutual understanding and sensitivity among Jews of different religious backgrounds and commitments to observance.
AVI CHAI Goals AVI CHAI believes a vibrant Jewish future depends on a commitment to:
what fields does AVI CHAI fund in North America? • Jewish day schools • Jewish overnight summer camps A decision we reached based on research demonstrating that these key vehicles will produce the energizing nucleus for 21st Century Jewry.
IMPORTANT TAKE-AWAY #1 Don’t expect national foundations to solve your local funding needs.
IMPORTANT TAKE-AWAY #2 Don’t expect foundations to share your perspective from the outset.
we look for partners who • Share our values and priorities. • Put the mission first, ahead of institutional politics. • Are outcome oriented. • Demonstrate real partnership and transparency. • Have skin in the game and a realistic plan for sustainability.
AVI CHAI’s Spend down what does it mean? • The foundation is closing its doors in January 2020 and will spend all of its assets by then except for an endowment for our operating cultural center in Jerusalem. • The foundation will not endow any programs or institutions other than Beit AVI CHAI in Jerusalem. • In anticipation of the foundation’s closing, staff is working with key grantees to build internal capacities for their sustainability and viability post AVI CHAI. • AVI CHAI plans to use the remaining seven years to develop partnerships to support existing and co-create new programs in our areas of interest.
Examples of Partnerships • The Jim Joseph Foundation (JJF) Day school and camp professional development, research and policy and capacity building. • The Kohelet Foundation The MATCH program and new efforts to advance online and blended learning in day schools. • The Marcus Foundation A program to enhance Israel education at summer camps. • Sam Zell A pilot program of the National Ramah Commission to recruit non-affiliated new campers.
What will AVI CHAI’s Legacy Be? • The students, campers, educators and leaders who have participated in AVI CHAI sponsored programs. • The day schools and camps that have been built, expanded or supported through our loans and finance-related programs. • The key institutions, programs, people and ideas in our fields of interest – Jewish day schools and overnight summer camps. • Our partners and co-creators of innovative and effective Jewish educational programs to advance shared values and philanthropic goals.
