Our Difficulties In Studying Romans “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Rom. 1:16)
Paul’s Letter to the Romans • Long accepted as a “difficult” book. • Experienced scholars among us were asked to lecture on it. • “Without the total grasping of the total book, you’ll never appreciate it’s beauty.”
5 Propositions in Romans • 1. Mankind is lost in sin. 1:18; 2:5. • 2. Law is NOT the remedy. Chapter 7 • 3. God’s plan is one of GRACE as expressed in Jesus – 3:24 • 4. Justification is offered on the condition of wholehearted FAITH. Ch. 4 • 5. The offering is UNIVERSAL; to both Jew and Gentile – Ch. 11
But We Have Preconceived Notions • 1. We think “gospel” means faith, repentance, confession and baptism. • We know about grace, the promises of God, mercy don’t impress us. Obedience is more important. We lack the feeling of dependence on God. • We have, to the extreme, related “forgiveness” to our doing.
2. We fight “faith only” when we see “faith.” • Martin Luther inserted “faith only” for faith. We haven’t forgotten. • Faith isn’t isolated, but we give a classical definition of something we may not have. • A “system” of faith.
3. We tend to think “law of Moses” when we read “law”. • Justification by “law” requires perfection, Gal. 3:10-12. • We can’t be saved by ANY law, since we don’t keep it (3:19-21) • True, We are under the New Covenant, but we don’t serve the covenant (Gal 3:13f)
4. We think “Holy Spirit” when we read spirit. • A contrast inner man vs. external observance – 1:9; 7:25; 2:29; 6:17 • A sincere heart, not an “enabling power.”
