Where have they been found? • In Great Lakes • Rhode Island • St. Lawrence Seaway • Wisconsin • Arkansas • Mississippi River • Mohawk and Hudson River
How did they get here? • Cargo ships from Europe came to the Great Lakes to drop off cargo. They had these mussels stuck to the bottom of their ships.
What do they effect in the water? • At first the water ways to the power plants were not blocked but when these mussels came into the waters in the United States they became a huge problem. • They stop the flow of water to the power plants. • They cause trouble with navigation through the waters in the ocean or lakes. They get on the bottom of the boats and weigh it down also they can get into the cooling system and cause the boat to overheat.
How much money in damages do they cause? • They cause power plants to spend up to 300,950 dollars a year so they can clean their water pipes out.
Future • I think that the zebra mussel will keep growing and expanding across the water ways. Also I think that it is going to start causing people more and more money to help them clean up the problems they cause.
