  1. Social Studies Fair PRESENTATION

  2. Who can participate? • Students from grades 5-12. • Individually or groups up to 3 students.

  3. Teachers’ Purpose and Goal Use a variety of instructional techniques for guiding students in understanding social studies concepts and research methodology.

  4. Purpose and Goal for Students Develop a visual and verbal presentation on a selected topic by • Selecting a significant topic of study; • Gathering and analyzing data; • Interpreting findings; and • Reporting conclusions

  5. Important Dates and Times • Turn in certificate/ribbon order Oct. 15th to Bridgette Pearson • School Fair completed by Jan. 7, 2010 • Clayton County Fair Jan. 23, 2010 Kendrick Middle School Set Up Jan. 22, 2010 4:00 – 7:00 • Regional Fair Kendrick Middle School • State Fair TBA

  6. Social Studies Fair Requirements/Regulations • Names of all students must be on entry form. (1 entry form for group) • Projects are limited to space of 30 inches front to back, 48 inches in width (opened), and 60 inches in height. • Audio or video recordings, slides, computers can not exceed 10 minutes. Must not be distracting to other projects.

  7. Requirements/Regulations continued • Regional and state fairs require at least one student who worked on the project must be present to interpret the project. Student should be prepared to present a five-minutes oral overview of the project to the judges.

  8. Requirements/Regulations All projects must be accompanied by a research summary paper of approximately four or five double-spaced typed pages. The summary paper must include: give the question being explored, methodology, conclusion of project, and bibliographic references. Proper footnotes are required for direct citations.

  9. Requirements/Regulations • An abstract of the project on a 3” x 5” card. Abstract includes title, statement of problem or question, methodology, and conclusion. Card is given to judges before interview.

  10. Requirements/Regulations Visual Presentation • Clear statement of question being studied • Methodology (procedures used in research) • Visuals that illustrate or enhance the research findings • Conclusion(s), based on analysis and interpretation of data the directly answer the questions being studied

  11. Requirements/Regulations • Scoring sheet is posted on www.gcss.net • Must be strong enough to remain intact when moved. • Students must furnish all equipment needed. Students must indicate on the entry form if an electrical outlet is needed.

  12. Requirements/Regulations Students must be responsible for setting up the project for display and must remove the project at the required time. Projects left at the local, regional, and state fairs beyond removal time will be discarded.

  13. Why have a Social Studies Fair? • Improves students’ skills in social studies. • Recognizes and rewards students’ academic competence in social studies. • Creates public awareness of social studies.
