What did the students say? • 94% are interested in working at a job that relates to their studies • 76% want help finding their “ideal career” • Only17% have taken advantage of career services on campus • 72% would like visit business sites • 90% want to spend some time with someone actually doing the job they think they want • Only 7% have taken an internship class
Why do students need it? • Students are concerned about their future and want some help with the process • Just reading about career information isn’t nearly as powerful or influential as experiencing something first-hand • A good percentage of students don’t take advantage of services already available on campus
What are some WBL examples? • SCANS Skills integrated into classroom • Guest Speakers • Worksite Visits • Informational Interview • Job Shadow • Internship • Cooperative Work Experience • Mentor • Service Learning
How can we help students? • Integrate work-based learning experiences and skills into the curriculum • Teach students the career development process • Provide opportunities for students to experience the workplace • Allow students to reflect on their experiences and plan for the “next steps”
