What is Fragile X Syndrome? • A genetic condition that causes a range of development problems. • It can range from learning disabilities to more severe intellectual disabilities as well.
How and when is this diagnosed? • Fragile X can be diagnosed using the person’s blood for the analysis of the FMR1 gene. • But this test will not be able to detect what disabilities they will have. • You can test for this before you decide to have a baby.
The causes for Fragile X Fragile X is caused by a change or mutation in one single gene.
How can this be prevented? • Unfortunately, Fragile X Syndrome cannot be prevented. • The only thing that can help is by going and getting genetic counseling that will help the family understand their risks.
Is there a cure? • Once again, as of now there is no definite cure. • But as for treatments you can: • Receive appropriate education. • Behavior or physical therapy. • Medication for skills and capabilities.
