Classroom Management is very personal to most teachers • Create a system that fits your style • Try something new • Tweak what isn’t working well
Point Systems are one way to let kids take a role in classroom management • Grant points for desired behavior • Allow students to redeem points for rewards • Deduct points for undesirable behavior
You could Grant Points for…. • Signed Progress Report • Signed Syllabus • Attending Open House • Bringing Supplies • Perfect Attendance • Arriving on Time • No Discipline Referrals • Completing Chores • No Zeros
Students could ‘Spend’ Points for… • 1 point for a restroom break • 2 points to drop a daily grade • 3 points to drop a quiz grade • For Disciplinary Purposes
How to Manage Points… • No Need to ‘clip coupons’ • Points can carry over • Pass out Reports • Students can Choose
Benefits • Fewer Restroom Breaks • Plentiful Supplies • Clean/Organized Classroom • Improved Compliance • Student ownership of Grades
Drawbacks • Lots of Grades for Lots of Points • Extra Work on you • Time to complete Task. • Not Motivating for all students
What do you think? • Would a point system work for you? • Have you done this before? • What modifications would you make? • What parts are you considering?
Classroom Management • Engaged = Compliant • Quiet Engaged • On Time! On Task! • Short Attention Span • Variety is Engaging!
