  4. A “Favela” is the word used in Brazil to describe a shanty town. Learning Objective: To understand what life in a favela is like.

  5. A Shanty Town is a squatter community that springs up in an area that used to have no houses.

  6. A Squatter is someone who settles on the land without the legal right to be there.

  7. Shanty Towns are also called “Spontaneous Settlements”. It means the place is unplanned.

  8. ROCINHA is the biggest favela in Rio De Janeiro.

  9. It’s also the biggest in South America!

  10. With people living on top of people!

  11. Electricity comes from wherever you can get it!

  12. And goes wherever it is needed!

  13. Around 200,000 people live in Rocinha... WHY?

  14. Death Rates in Rocinha are THREE times higher than the rest of Rio. Why?
