  1. Metadata Helpfrom the DMCOur motivation is toenable networks to perpetually archive their data inopen and accessible archives. Rick Benson IRIS Consortium Metadata Workshop, Bogotå

  2. The Successful Currency to Date: Dataless SEED • It’s for basic accounting & note taking GOAL: • Create metadata that produces an accurate 2 history of ground motion at each station. • Some is easy- • Where (locations/depths/orientations), • Accurate orientations to get at elastic anisotropy, • Gains and timing to get accurate magnitudes, locations, etc • When (epochs, installations, decommissions) • What (description of sensor/dataloggers) • Some is hard- RESPONSES are the key component, hardest to get right Metadata Workshop, Bogotå

  3. Get the Software fromthe web:http://www.iris.edu/dms/nodes/dmc/software/downloads/pdcc/38-pl1/You will be prompted to fill out a "software request" form prior to download Metadata Workshop, Bogotå

  4. Move the zip file to appropriate installation directory on your machine • Type: unzip pdcc-3.8.zip • You may also double-click the icon to invoke your computer’s default mechanism for unpacking the file. Metadata Workshop, Bogotå

  5. Directory called PDCC-3.8 The directory will contain these files/directories: Metadata Workshop, Bogotå

  6. IRIS Solution: PDCC and Nominal Response Library (NRL) PDCC: http://www.iris.edu/dms/nodes/dmc/software/downloads/pdcc/38-pl1/ NRL: http://www.iris.edu/NRL Metadata Workshop, Bogotå

  7. To run PDCC, type this command: java (–Xmx512m –Xms512m) –jar run_pdcc.jar • The –X options in parenthesis are optional) • The –Xmx512m is to increase heap space in Java • The –Xms512m is to increase stack space in Java • You may not need to increase resource allocation but it doesn’t hurt if you have it. Metadata Workshop, Bogotå

  8. NRL Tool: built into PDCC Metadata Workshop, Bogotå

  9. Build a dataless SEED • Answer GUI questions that guide you to correct RESP file for your sensor first, then datalogger • Information is imported from NRL • Overall gains are calculated, evaluated Metadata Workshop, Bogotå

  10. PDCC as dataless editor Metadata Workshop, Bogotå

  11. Some common problems • Channel epochs don’t fall within station epochs • Channel epochs overlap; must be unique • Example: • 2001,192,18:00:00 to 2005,192,23:45:00 followed by: • 2005,191:23:45:00 to NoEnd • Numerous station epochs, not needed unless station has moved • Please follow site-name convention/protocol • CMB Columbia College, California, USA • Check your coordinates, get + and – right or your station ends up in Mongolia Metadata Workshop, Bogotå

  12. Dataless SEED volumes • http://www.iris.edu/pub/RESPONSES/DATALESS_SEEDS • These are auto-built when new metadata is delivered to DMC, merging all stations into network volumes • They are “as-is” • What is needed is help getting these correct • Means that what comes in needs to be correct Metadata Workshop, Bogotå
