  2. Overview “The Raven Way” Behavioral Expectations Plan is comprised of several components: • 1) EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENT BEHAVIOR; • 2) TIERED CONSEQUENCES FOR STUDENTS, AND GUIDELINES FOR TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS; and • 3) REGULAR POSITIVE BEHAVIOR REWARDS.

  3. Purpose Statement The purpose of implementing The Raven Way at Ridge Road Middle School is to: • Model and teach positive behavior expectations and reward successful student behaviors. • Create a more positive culture in the entire learning community. • Maintain an environment in which all students can learn. • Empower teachers by providing tools for reinforcement and classroom consequences. • Support teachers by providing guidelines for Administrative response.

  4. School Goals • Students at Ridge Road Middle School will meet our four expectations: • Be Respectful • Be Responsible • Be Motivated • Be Safe

  5. Teacher and Staff Responsibilities • Teachers and staff will teach, model, and practice each of the behavioral expectations throughout the school year. • Teachers and staff will acknowledge and reward student behaviors that meet our behavior expectations. • Teachers and staff will actively monitor student behavior in classrooms, hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, and all areas of the school. • Teachers will use the behavior matrix/rubric to correct student behaviors that do not meet the Raven Way expectations; and • Administrators will use the behavior matrix/rubric to implement appropriate consequences.

  6. Character Education Lessons • Teachers will be provided with four days of character education lessons that will be taught during the first week of school (beginning on Tuesday). • The lessons will take approximately 30 minutes and concentrate on each of “The Raven Way” expectations, as well as general character education. • Electives will teach general Character Ed, Math will teach Respect, Language Arts will teach Responsibility, Social Studies will teach Motivation, and Science will teach Safety, as follows: • Day 1, 8/27: Elective=Character Education #1; Math= Respect #1; Language Arts= Responsibility #1; Social Studies=Motivation #1, Science=Safe #1 Day 2, 8/28: Elective=Character Education #2; Math= Respect #2; Language Arts= Responsibility #2; Social Studies=Motivation #2, Science=Safe #2 Day 3, 8/29: Elective=Character Education #3; Math= Respect #3; Language Arts= Responsibility #3; Social Studies=Motivation #3, Science=Safe #3 Day 4, 8/30: Elective=Character Education #4; Math= Respect #4; Language Arts= Responsibility #4; Social Studies=Motivation #4, Science=Safe #4

  7. Parent Education • Programs for parents and students will be offered periodically throughout the year to assist parent and student understanding of RRMS expectations and other helpful information.

  8. RRMS Behavior Offense Tracker • Teachers will use the RRMS Behavior Offense Tracker to document offenses, consequences, and parent contact. The Tracker will be attached to all administrative referrals (possible exceptions: Yellow Page Offenses, other serious offenses requiring immediate referral).

  10. After- or Before-School Detention (ASD/BSD) • School-wide, teacher-managed ASD/BSD (grade level) is an essential element of the tiered consequences. • ASD/BSD sessions are scheduled throughout the year on an alternating basis (ASD one week, BSD the next). • Both Core and Elective teachers will conduct ASD/BSD, with two teachers per session. • Each teacher would only have to cover one ASD/BSD session per semester.

  11. Administrative Referrals • Teachers will attach the RRMS Offense Tracker to the referral (possible exceptions: Yellow Page Offenses, other serious offenses requiring immediate referral). • Administrators will apply the appropriate consequence, as indicated in the RRMS Rules and Tiered Consequences, and notify the teachers of said consequence by returning the yellow portion of the referral.

  12. Alternative Suspension Center (ASC) • Because ISS is not feasible for RRMS at this time, ASC will be considered as ISS. • To avoid class interruption to acquire current work, ASC packets for each grade-level and department will be available and provided to the student/parent by the Administrator at the time ASC is assigned.

  13. Positive Behavior Rewards • Another essential element of The Raven Way Plan is regular, positive behavior reinforcement on a school-wide basis. • Bonus PPA: Every other week, students can earn an additional 20 minutes of PPA. • Bonus PPA will take place every Friday, with eighth-grade one week and sixth- and seventh-grade the following week. Each grade will be assigned a designated PPA area. (On Bonus PPA days, additional PPA will not take place. ) • Bonus PPA will be hosted at the grade level by department. This ensures that each teacher will only sacrifice a half-hour of classes one day every two months to offer this reward.

  14. Bonus PPA Rotation Schedule • Departments will host the Bonus PPA in the following rotation order (a calendar will be provided): • 1st Bonus PPA Day: All science teachers will host bonus PPA each block • 2nd Bonus PPA Day: All social studies teachers will host bonus PPA each block • 3rd Bonus PPA Day: All language arts teachers will host bonus PPA each block • 4th Bonus PPA Day: All math teachers will host bonus PPA each block

  15. Quarterly Block Party • In conjunction with the PTSA, a school-wide block party will be held once per quarter for students who: • 1) Have not received ASC or OSS; and • 2) Have served two or less ASD/BSD’s. • The dates and format for the Block Parties will be provided. (The format will be mindful of minimizing the impact on instructional time.)

  16. Team Rewards • Each Team is encouraged to develop regular Team Rewards. • Team Rewards could take place on the alternating Friday when there is no Bonus PPA. This would provide a weekly positive incentive for all students. • Teachers are also encouraged to develop classroom rewards to reinforce positive behavior.

Benefits of “The Raven Way” • By following a consistent, school-wide Behavior Expectations Plan, our goals of creating a more positive culture, maintaining an environment in which all students can learn, and empowering and supporting our teachers at RRMS can be achieved and student growth will increase!
