1. SC DHEC Public Health Region 5 Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Calhoun and Orangeburg Counties

2. WIC-Women, Infants and Children • Federally Funded through the USDA • Supplemental Food Program • Established to assist the nutritional well-being of women, infants and children during critical growth periods

3. WIC • Provides healthy foods • Teaches about good nutrition • Provides breastfeeding support and information to new mothers

4. WIC-Eligibility • Women who are pregnant or have recently been pregnant • Infants: Newborn to age 1 • Children: Age 1 to age 5.

5. Eligibility • Low or moderate income • Special need that can be helped by WIC foods and nutritional counseling • Resident of South Carolina

6. WIC Requirements • Proof of identity: driver’s license, work or school I.D., birth certificate or hospital birth card for baby. Proof is needed for all applying for WIC. • Proof of address: utility bill (telephone, electric, cable or rental agreement. You only need one. • Proof of Family Income (all members earning or receiving income)-Medicaid Card, Food Stamp or TANF notice, paystubs, tax return

7. WIC • Diet recall for applicant • Height and weight measurement for applicant • Blood test for iron (women and children) • Applicant must be present. If applicant is newborn/child a parent or legal guardian (notarized statement) must accompany child

8. Family Planning (FP) • Provides information and services to help you make family planning decision to prevent unintentional pregnancies • Provided as required by federal regulations • Services are private and confidential • Services are based on a sliding fee scale • Is not sick care or other medical care

9. FP • A complete individual and family history • A physical assessment, including a Pap smear • Laboratory testing, including pregnancy testing, as appropriate • STD/HIV risk assessment, education and counseling, testing • Administration and dispensing of legally prescribed drugs and other methods of birth control, and • Follow up of abnormal findings, as required by program policy or federal guidelines.

11. FP Referrals: Adoption Other Medical Care (Hypertension, abnormal pap smear, sinus infection etc) Sterilization

12. Postpartum Newborn Home Visit (PPNHV) • Service for new Moms and newborns • Medicaid benefit • Requires a doctor’s order

13. PPNBHV • Usually occurs within 2 weeks of discharge from hospital after delivery • Visit takes about 2 hours • Provided by a Registered Nurse

14. PPNBHV • Ask you about how you and your baby are doing • Weigh your baby • Do a physical exam on your baby • Check your blood pressure • Do a partial physical exam on you, if needed • Help you with getting health care provider's appointments for you and your baby • May give you a barrier method of birth control Refer you to other community resources as needed (Things like WIC, BabyNet, local parenting groups, and others)

15. PPNBHV Education about Baby • Well child care • Immunizations for your baby • Ways to keep your baby safe at home, while sleeping, in the car, and at other places • Ways to keep your baby healthy • Taking care of your baby’s skin, mouth, umbilical cord, circumcision. • How your baby’s brain and body develop. • Feeding your baby • Signs and symptoms of illness

16. PPNBHV Education for Mom • Breast care • Signs and symptoms of illness • Postpartum hygiene • Postpartum activity • Sleep needs • Nutrition needs • Birth control methods • Prevention of sexually transmitted infections

17. Immunizations • Provides immunizations to protect against childhood diseases. • South Carolina requires children in schools and day cares to be immunized. • The Health Department will give immunizations to keep children up-to-date for their ages.

18. Children’s Rehabilitative Services (CRS) • The CRS System of Care provides nursing intervention, social work services, nutrition services, parent-to-parent support, in and out-patient hospitalizations, braces, hearing aids, specialized medical equipment, physical, occupational and speech therapies, and genetic services

19. CRS • To participate in the CRS program, a child must be a legal resident of the United States, live in South Carolina, be under 21 years old, be diagnosed with a covered medical condition, and the family must meet certain income guidelines

20. CRS • CRS offers treatment and services for many disabilities, some of which are listed below: • Bone and joint diseases; • Cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial anomalies; • Spina Bifida and other congenital anomalies; • Epilepsy (seizures), cerebral palsy and other central nervous system disorders; • Rheumatic fever; • Problems from accidents, burns, and poisoning; • Endocrine disorders • Developmental delays such as speech/language, motor and growth abnormalities; and • Kidney diseases.

21. CRS Services Not Covered • Routine visits to your family doctor or pediatrician; • Routine dental care; • Emergency room treatment; • Transportation, including ambulance; • Medical services not related to the CRS covered health problem

22. Sexually Tranmitted Diseases (STD) • DHEC provides services to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) and HIV infection, to reduce associated illness and death, and to provide care and support resources for persons with HIV disease.

23. STD Services • Testing, diagnosis, treatment, and educational services for individuals requesting such services and those who have had contact with an STD-infected individual
