    2. Early Life Born in 1767 in the Carolinas Little education Joined the Continental Army as a courier at age 13 Imprisoned by British and carried hatred of them for his whole life Became an outstanding lawyer

    3. Politics The first man elected to House of Representatives from Tennessee Prosecuting officer in Tennesse as well as a lawyer Served briefly in the Senate then resigned Served six years as a judge on the Tennessee Supreme Court Governor of the territory of Florida

    4. War Served as a major general in the war of 1812 Became a national hero when he defeated the British at New Orleans Nicknamed “Old Hickory” because of his strict discipline

    5. The “Stolen Election” Jackson ran against Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams and William H. Crawford Jackson swept the popular vote but did not have enough electoral votes to automatically become president House of Representatives chose Adams in a shocking turn

    6. Campaign During the campaign Adams charged Jackson and his wife with adultery because Rachel (his wife) was married before and there was confusion over her divorce Jackson won the 1828 election against Adams in a landslide

    7. Presidency He used the power of veto more times than all of the previous presidents combined Recommended eliminating the electoral college (the “Stolen Election” probably influenced this action) Warned against “money power”

    8. The Second Bank of the United States Refused to sanction the recharter of the Bank Of U.S. Believed that Congress had not had the authority to make the Bank in the first place Thought that the bank primarily benefited the upper class at the expense of the working and lower classes

    9. Native Americans Bad record with Natives Led troops into several wars against Indians Indian Removal Act passed in 1830 Act offered the Indians land west of the Mississippi in return for them leaving 100 million acres of traditional Indian lands were cleared

    10. Firsts First populist president who did not come from the aristocracy First to have vice-president (John C. Calhoun) resign First to be nominated at a national convention First to use pocket veto to kill a congressional bill
