OVERVIEW • Perfect Storm – Eric Dishman. • Average Age SNF/HCBS Residents. • Our Data – Majority Seniors Disconnected. • IFAS – Who will care for us? • Weinberg Initiative RFP $9 Million – Caregivers.
THE PROBLEM • 77 million seniors are entering retirement • 90% would prefer to be cared for in their homes • We can’t build enough institutions to care for all the seniors entering the market • There is a shortage of clinical personnel and caregivers to provider needed services • Baby boomer are requesting, expecting and using more technology
BACKGROUNDSELECTED STATISTICS • Florida 19% 65+ • Palm Beach County 24% 65+ • Jewish Population of Palm Beach County 60% 65+ • No family in immediate surrounding counties.
RELEVANT TRENDS • Life expectancy. • Shortage of healthcare personnel – geriatric care (geriatricians, nurses, care managers). • Shift left – monitoring role. Shift Left • Increasing need to manage scarce resources. • Long Term Care increasingly difficult to operate in black. • Policy (State-National) – move to HCBS.
MORSELIFE • 280 beds SNF. • 65 Short Term Stay – to be 80. • 144 IL/AL (180 in active development). • 14 levels of care. • Loring Institute for Geriatric Research & Education.

SLEEP PATTERNS AND QUALITY: CASE STUDY • Normal sleep behavior until increase in overall restlessness over a 3 month span • Complained of depression and fatigue in February and March • Paxil prescribed in middle of March note immediate change
LESSONS LEARNED • Website – initial issues. • Logger problems. • Windows platform. • Dial-up. • Single unit dweller.
IMPLICATIONS • We can monitor virtually anything. • How, why, when for what purpose. • Baselines must be normalized to individual. • Labor intensive. • Do not undertake without clear goals.
IMPLICATIONS CONTINUED • Data can help in staffing decisions. • Sleep monitoring – new iterations. • Not for profit communities role – evaluate and pilot. • Tipping point concept.
