2. Plauen’s History • Located half way between Munich and Berlin, small city surrounded by forests and hills. The city is known as a sleepy backwater that sat on the wrong side of the Berlin wall for decades. • For years Plauen was a small city where farmers could buy and sell goods, then between 1890-1914 the population tripled reaching 118,000 people. • Textile mills in the city specialized in lace and embroidered fabrics exporting to the United States. • Before the war Plauen has the most millionaires, after the most suicides and highest unemployment rate. • Plauen was also the first city that thrived during the war outside of Bavarid to organize its own chapter of Nazi party. • May of 1923 the city became Nazi headquarters for Saxony. Hitler visited a few times.

3. McDonalds came to Germany • Plauen became part of the communist German Democratic Republican. It was under Communist party leadership. • Plauen people eventually got tired of being pushed around and 20,000 people gathered to protest. • Protesters had water bombs, helicopters surrounding them, and soldiers pointing guns but they would not budge. • A few months later the Berlin Wall fell marking the end of the Cold War. McDonalds then announced plans to open the fist restaurant in East Germany.

McDonald’s Outside U.S • Decade ago there were 3,000 McDonald's outside the U.S, today it has 17,000 in more than 120 countries. • Currently opens 5 new restaurants everyday • Earns majority of it’s profit outside of the U.S • Ranks as most widely recognized brand in the world, above Coca Cola • Known as “Uncle McDonald” because he is “funny, gentle, kind, and he understood children’s hearts.” Coke is the favorite drink and McDonald’s is the favorite food of Chinese children. • The McDonald’s at Dachau is one-third of a mile from the entrance to the concentration camp.
