UNM Mentoring Conference • International, eclectic • Current research • Are we doing things right?
Research • Not much new, finished • Every program measured thru standards shows at least 33% greater retention • $1.66 return per $1 due to student outcomes and teacher retention --(New Teacher Center study published 2007) • Anecdotal (mentors learn as much as partners)
Induction • Purpose: Improve instructional practice of novice teachers • Increase student learning • Accelerate teacher effectiveness • Strengthen teacher leadership • Foster effective norms of collaboration and ongoing learning • Improve teacher retention
Induction • Comprehensive: • Aligned to program goals • OTJ coaching • Multi-year, multi-support • Ongoing formative assessment • Sanctioned time for PD • Mentoring key --IL Standards
Induction - research • Students taught by teachers who receive comprehensive induction support for at least 2 years demonstrate significantly higher learning gains in math and reading • Novice teachers perform as well as veterans! --Fed-funded randomized controlled trial, per IL Standards
Mentoring - what works • Partners share same values (and weaknesses!) • Listening skills • Observation • Training • Time
What doesn’t work as well • SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely) not so smart here! • Weakest tool is telephone. Email better. Blended best. --Clutterbuck plenary
Current • 36 trained & available for partners • 17 active partnerships winter 2011 • First cross-program partnership
What we do right • Train • Reflect (logs) • Pay mentor • Program/system support • Other?
Improvements? • Are we supporting mentors enough? • Training • Time for observations • Program recognition • Other ideas?
