The European cartographers of the 16th and 17th century depict a gigantic terrestrial mass in the southern hemisphere, the terra incognita or terra australis. Why did the Europeans explore? • Trade (e.g. Spices and silk from India and China) • Religion • Culture • Map making techniques improved • Ships were improved, making sea travel safer and easier
What was the impact? Europeans settled in new lands and established colonies, owned and governed by Europeans. They considered themselves superior to the indigenous populations, and often took control by force.
Europeans took unclaimed land and settled in these new areas
Europeans farmed and built on the land. Bringing foreign crops and animals.
Europeans tried to civilise the indigenous people. Particularly through new laws and culture.
