Mind-Body-Spirit Connection By: Alex Ingram and Zach Coward
If the mind can control what the body craves then is it also possible for the mind to help the body become healthier or even more likely to survive in life/death situations?
Why does this happen? • Autonomic Nervous System • Part of brain where emotional memories and responses occur
Mind-Body Connection • When the mind or spirit is in a state of distress, the body can also be affected. • When the body is unhealthy, the mind and spirit may be negatively affected.
Role of Mind-Body Institutes • Chopra Center for Well-Being, LaJolla, CA • Uses herbs, diet, massage, exercise, music, and yoga • Control of heart rate • Lower blood pressure • Normalizing bowel activity • Exceptionally high rate of spontaneous cancer remission
Effects on the body • Turns off the arousing effects of the sympathetic nervous system • Body becomes calm • Improves Immune System functions • Improves cardiovascular health • Decreases anxiety • Decreases depression • Benson, 1996, Kabat-Zinn, 1990, Koenig, 1999, Ornish, 1990
Placebos • Placebos are pills that contain no active ingredients instead, sugar, saline solution, or distilled water are used. • A chronic fatigue medication trial conducted by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseaseproved that placebos, “improve a patient's condition simply because the person has the expectation that it will be helpful.”
26 Placebo Experiments http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/2000/100_heal.html
Therefore, in an experiment of 1,000,000 people 320,000 people would react to a placebo.
Is it possible to treat the body without consideration of the mind and spirit?
Does Religion Impact Health? • Churchgoers live longer • Death ages • No church 75 • Once per week 82 • More than weekly 83 • Churchgoers promote healthy habits • Less depression +131% • More exercise +54% • Avoid alcohol +39% • Newberg, American Psychologist Journal
What does America think? • 84% think that praying for the sick improves their chances of recovery • 70% say they pray often for the health of a family member
Duke studies • 750 patients undergoing heart catheterization • Group who were prayed for did no better than a second group that received standard care or a third group that was given a special program of music, therapeutic touch & guided imagery • Fourth group that received both prayers and the music program had death rates 30% lower than any of the other groups
