INTRODUCTION • Safe food supply is key in ensuring the health of consumers and economic progress of a country. • It is also a major component of food security. • Ghana needs to develop and adopt strategies to ensure that total food safety management systems are installed in the food supply chain.
Socio-Economic Consequence • 1.8 million death annually – WHO • 17 M US Dollars spent by GOG for treatment of foodborne illnesses in Ghana for 2006 – FAO
Principal Goal of the Food Safety Management Strategy This is to reduce the health and socio-economic burden of foodborne diseases among the Ghanaian populace to ensure that wealth is created through the abundance of good health.
How to achieve the goal • Provision of the legal framework • Identifying the sectors along the food supply chain and developing measures to address issues of food safety concerns at each sector. • Assessing, communicating and managing foodborne risks, in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders and partners
Approaches • Identification of all MDAs involved in food supply chain in Ghana, clearly defining/establishing their roles and strengthening them to play these roles effectively. • Assessment of the food-safety risk in the food supply chain to prevent, eliminate or reduce food safety hazards and development of methods for assessing the safety of products of new technologies. • Enhancement of public education in food safety.
