Chapter# 1 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
After you have studded the chapter, you should be able to • Explain the five parts of an information system. • Distinguish between system and application software. • Discuss the three kinds of system software programs. • Identify the four types of computers and for types of • microcomputers. • Describe the different types of computer hardware. • Define data and describe document, worksheet ,database • And presentation file. • Explain computer connectivity, the wireless revolution • and the Internet.
What is information technology (IT): “the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware” What is information system ?
An information system has sex parts : People Procedures : the rules or guidelines for people to follow when using software, hardware and data. 3- Software : the program tell the computer how to do its work 4- Hardware : the equipment that processes the data to create information (mouse ,keyboard) 5- Data :the raw, unprocessed facts including text, number ,image, sound. 6- connectivity : allows computer to connect an to share information (by cable or through the air )
People • Most important part of any system • Computer uses • Business & Entertainment • Education & Medicine
software • Two major kinds of software • System Software : • is not single program .rather it is collection of programs • Background software that helps the computer manage its own resources • including the following • Operating system : winXp,win vista ,Mac OS X • Utilities : perform specific tasks related to managing computer resources • Device drive • Application Software • “End-user” software
hardware • Equipment that processes the data • Controlled by software • Physical devices • Keyboard • Mouse • Monitor • Other devices
Types of Computers • Supercomputers • High capacity • Used by very large organizations • Powerful • For example “IBM Blue Gene” • Mainframe computers • - Nearly as powerful as supercomputers • (e.x: insurance company) • Minicomputers • Medium sizeed • For large company • Microcomputers
Microcomputers • Least powerful • Widely used • Four types of Microcomputers • - Desktop (pc) • -notebook or labtop • Tablet pc • - handheld (PDAs)
Microcomputer Hardware • System unit • Microprocessor • Memory (RAM) • Input/output devices • Input device : keyboard ,mouse • Output device : printer , monitor • Secondary storage • Floppy disk • Hard disk • Optical disk (CD ,DVD) • Communications • Modem • Network card
Data What different between data and information? • Stored data electronically in files • Document files • Worksheet files • Database files • Presentation files
Connectivity • Allows computers to share information and to connect to the internet wireless revolution : is the widespread and increasing use of mobile(wireless) communication devices
Discussion Questions • What are the five parts of an information system? • What is the different between data and information ? • Describe the two major kinds of software ? • Describe three types of system software programs? • What are the four types of computer? • Describe the four types of micro computer? • Describe the four basic categories of microcomputer hardware? • Define data , list four common types of file? • Define connectivity and the wireless revolution ?
