BIRTHDAYS • To celebrate students’ special day, they will choose a game to enjoy with their classmates for the last 15 minutes of the day. • Due to many food allergies, the school is asking for special treats to be saved for home
Conference sign-ups are on the table near the door • Administration has set aside 5 days and 28 time slots • Each conference will be 25-30 minutes in duration
students receive 2 report cards in second grade...one in February and one in June AU=Advanced Understanding of skill or concept WU=Working Understanding DU= Developing Understanding LU=Limited Understanding

ELA & READING STREET • Aligned to Common Core State Standards • Program consists of whole class and small group instruction • Leveled reading groups, differentiated practice stations and independent activities • Program is rich in vocabulary, great for building comprehension skills, fluency, grammar and writing skills Grammar Jammer
Mathematics Skills and Concepts: • adding and subtracting-this is where the 2nd grade math curriculum begins. This is a review from 1st grade. To review facts, I will begin giving 10 facts per week with a quiz on Friday, called Fast Ten (baggies) • Counting money and making change • Measurement/lenghth, area, capacity and weight • Time and Temperature • Graphing: bar/picture/pie graphs • Patterns to 1000
MATHEMATICS CONTINUED • Problem solving-using TOPs cards at various levels (differentiated instruction} • Versatiles, tangle tables, money bingo and sequencing are some of the math games used to reinforce understanding of concepts enVision Math: • Alligned to Common Core State Standards • This is a very language rich program • We will cover 16topics • enVision
SOCIAL STUDIES Mapping Skills • including the study of Urban, Rural and Suburban settings (make sure to check out our murals in the hallway) • What makes a community? • Looking at continents, countries, towns and villages • Looking at symbols, flags and history Native American Trails
PBIS School wide program that implements a positive behavior system using the acronym C.A.R.E. Cooperation Acceptance Responsibility Effort
HOMEWORK • Homework packets will be sent home on Mondays and should be returned to school on Fridays • Homework will consist of spelling practice including writing sentences as well as one or two worksheets • Math homework= fast facts (will go home on Fridays, Fast Ten Quiz the following Friday) Please remind your child to bring his baggie back to school • My skills tutor or site of the week • Read or be read to 15 minutes each school night • Reading Logs should be returned at the end of each month
