  1. Citavi – Adding References – Books from the Library Catalog

  2. Open your Citavi project to the Reference Editor workspace and click on the green cross above the References tab.

  3. Note that in addition to the reference type for Book, there are Book, Edited and Collected Work for those special types of books.

  4. There also is Contribution in for a chapter in an edited book or book of collected works.

  5. If our catalog record includes an ISBN for the book, just click on the Citavi Picker symbol next to it – either the 13-number or 10-number ISBN is fine if both appear, but select the correct format.

  6. Citavi opens a Book record and fills in the available citation information. If the Web address at the bottom doesn’t start out library.presby.edu, click on the red X to delete it.

  7. Then in the preview pane click on Add internet address.

  8. Return to the catalog record and copy the permanent link in the lower left corner.

  9. Then open the pop-up Location window, paste the permanent link in the [Web] box, and click OK.

  10. The catalog record Web page automatically will display in the preview pane.

  11. If the [Web] address does begin with library.presby.edu, click on Internet address above it and the catalog record should display in the preview pane.

  12. Toward the top of the preview pane, click on Click here to save a copy of this Web page as a PDF.

  13. Now you’ve attached the catalog record to conveniently revise or complete the citation information as needed and find the call number to retrieve the book from our collection.

  14. Next make sure the citation information is accurate and complete. In this case, you should notice in the catalog record that the book is edited.

  15. Citavi retrieved the citation information from this record in WorldCat, which inaccurately identifies the person responsible for the book as an author rather than an editor.

  16. In the Reference type field at the top of the editing pane, click on Book.

  17. Select Book, Edited and click OK.

  18. Click Yes to move the name into the editor field for the new reference type.

  19. Continuing to check the citation information, you’ll need to choose between Oxford and New York in the Place of publication field,

  20. then enter the Series title, and in the File drop-down menu click on Save project.

  21. If you decide to refer to an individual chapter of this edited book, click on Add contribution toward the middle of the reference pane.

  22. Then fill in the information for the following fields at least: Author, Title, Subtitle (if there is one), and Page range.

  23. If our catalog record includes an ISBN without a Citavi Picker symbol beside it,

  24. copy the ISBN number,

  25. select the appropriate reference type for this book, 0300041446

  26. paste the number in the ISBN field, and then click on the ISBN field label. 0300041446

  27. Citavi fills in the available citation information – but without a link to the source record in the preview pane. 0300041446

  28. Click on Add Internet address. 0300041446

  29. Return to the catalog record, copy the Permanent link to this record in the lower left corner, 0300041446

  30. paste the permanent link URL into the [Web] box, and click OK.

  31. Now you can save the Web page as a PDF, then revise or complete the citation information as needed.

  32. If you identify an ebook that you anticipate using, and the catalog record includes an ISBN, use it as usual to create a reference record in Citavi.

  33. Then remember to add the URL for the book itself in the Companion website field along with the Access date when you retrieve or download the ebook.

  34. Of course, if neither our catalog record nor the book itself includes an ISBN, you’ll have to open the appropriate reference record in Citavi and fill in all of the citation information manually.
