    17. What are your existing objectives and priorities in school e.g. positive behaviour, reward and recognition, global citizenship or promoting healthy lifestyles? How can Get Set and the Values help you? Get Set and the Values could give these objectives a higher profile and an inspirational context. Think of Get Set as a tool which you can use to help you achieve existing objectives. Share your aspirations for the school in terms of participating in London 2012. In this section, the assessors want to see how you’re excited by the Games and why you think being a part of the network will be a positive thing for your school. 18. 4 reasons for joining: Help children to understand what motivates athletes. Encourage children and their families to participate regularly in sport. Share ideas and resources with other schools. Support for co-ordinating an ambitious pan-European project based on sport and the Values. In their application, Park Hill Primary School (Coventry, West Midlands) said that they wanted to raise children’s awareness of London 2012, making them enthusiastic about this historic event and helping them to understand what motivates athletes. It would be also a chance to encourage children and their families to participate in a wider range of sports on a regular basis. Joining the Get Set network meant an opportunity to share resources and ideas with other schools. Of huge importance to Park Hill was gaining support in coordinating their ambitious European project which was to be based on sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Values. ‘As our project involves schools across Europe, we are hoping to achieve a level of global cohesion through our Olympic and Paralympic activities.’In their application, Park Hill Primary School (Coventry, West Midlands) said that they wanted to raise children’s awareness of London 2012, making them enthusiastic about this historic event and helping them to understand what motivates athletes. 19. Work with Get Set resources – or come up with your own project ideas for how the Values can be brought to life for your students What is unique about your school community that shows a commitment to the Values? We welcome your creativity! To answer the second question in the application form, you need to show how London 2012 has already had an impact on your school, and share any activities you have done that link to the Games and the Values. Remember – Get Set is not prescriptive – anything goes as long as the Values are at the heart of it. Here, assessors want to see how London 2012 has added value to the school community, so focus on what’s new/changed as a result of the Games and the Values. Have you enhanced an existing initiative/activity to make it about the Games/Values? Have you introduced something new which highlights the Games and the Values? 20. Values introduced with an assembly from Get Set Children awarded with gold medals for demonstrating the Values Inspired by Usain Bolt, children created advertising campaigns to promote running as part of a healthy active lifestyle Attended the BT Paralympic World Cup Made a presentation to Seb Coe about their Get Set work. In their application, Princeville Primary said that they had demonstrated a commitment to the Values by: Using an assembly from the Get Set website, the Olympic and Paralympic Values were introduced with gold medals awarded to children demonstrating these. Usain Bolt provided an inspiring focus for a variety of activities and in getting children to think about healthy lifestyles. To promote running, children created lively advertising campaigns including posters and radio/TV adverts. A group were lucky enough to be taken to the Paralympic World Cup. With limited tickets available for the visit children had to use their best persuasive writing skills, explaining why they deserved to go and which Values they had demonstrated. With Seb Coe as special guest, children joined other schools in Bradford to present work they had been doing as part of Get Set, some even taking part in an athletics event complete with a real gold-medallist spectator! 21. How can you progress and develop your work on the Values? How will you celebrate in 2012? Will you continue to work with the Values after the Games? In your response to this question, assessors simply want to know what else you have planned and how you will continue your Values related work? Is the activity you have already done something you will repeat, perhaps with other year groups? This question is about legacy – how will the Values continue to enrich your whole-school community after the Games are over?In your response to this question, assessors simply want to know what else you have planned and how you will continue your Values related work? 22. School Council is very keen to make friends with a school close to the Olympic Park Find out more about some of the countries taking part and develop an open, inclusive outlook for children from an almost entirely mono-cultural community Create a dance based on the Values. In their application, they said – We asked the St Cleer School Council for their initial ideas, and this is what they said: “ We would like to really know about the Olympics! We think it would be brilliant to get to know some children who live near the Olympic Park. We would write letters and emails and send them pictures of all the things we do here in Cornwall. We would love it if they could come and visit our school, and we would go to London to visit them. Some of us want to be better sportsmen and women and we think what the Olympic athletes do is amazing. The Get Set Network sounds like it would make our work much more interesting. Initial curriculum ideas include: • the history of the Games • studying some of the countries represented at the Games • writing and performing in the local Sterts Theatre our own musical • creating a dance featuring Olympic Values. The changes we hope being part of the Get Set Network would make to our school community include: • a more open and inclusive outlook; this is particularly important in our rural almost totally monocultural Cornish village • a change in the spirit and ethos of our school inspired by the Olympic ideals • a new openness to change and to working in creative, co-operative and open-ended ways. We have a thriving pupil School Council with representatives from every class. The Council meets weekly and, although attended by the Headteacher, it is run by the pupils for the pupils. The School Council would be a vehicle of planning, evaluation and dissemination of all activities involved in the project.
