The weaving Weaving has always had an important role in Sardinian handicraft thanks to the artisans’ skill. In the past different raw material were used. Wool, very precious, was used for clothes and other things, but, because it was expensive, the poor families couldn’t use it so they used: flax, cotton, silk and caprine wool. Women took care of this activity and of the dyeing that was obtained by boiling an infusion of herbs, plants, minerals or colourful earth; the shades obtained changed from yellow to brown, from red to black, from indigo to dark green.
Embroidery The art of embroidery is very old and its origin comes from the East. In Sardinia it is an activity mostly performed by women and it is used to adorn cotton and silk clothes.
Weavingtechniques • They are: • Smooth weaving or “a stuoia” (the oldest); • Grain weaving or “a pibiones” (widespread in the vast middle East area); • Stitch weaving or “a punt’e agu”; • Plot effect weaving “a un’in dente”; • Weaving “a fiocco o a nodo”.
OriginofSardiniancarpet The origin of Sardinian carpets comes from Eastern countries, in fact around the year 1000 they were imported from Persia; later the production was influenced by the Spanish invasion and culture.
