Review of Apps • Click on Start • Choose Programs • Applications have been arranged by category.
App Categories • CD-RW Tools (TE Lab only) • Connect to Information or Online Service • Database Mgmt, Text Mgmt, GIS • Electronic Mail • FTP Clients • Graphics, Video Presentations, Diagrams • HTML, CFM, JSP, CSS & XML Editors • Internet Browsers • Programming, Development • Reference Tools, CD-ROM Databases • Spreadsheets, Statistics, Project Mgmt • Video Conferencing & Chat • Word Processing & Publishing

Email Highly recommend using Webpine: https://webpine.washington.edu
Stupid PhotoShop Tricks. • Insert screen images into papers. • Manipulate photos and scanned images.
Dreamweaver • An excellent way to learn web-programming. • Can view code and preview at same time. • Produces clean HTML. • Can work with DB driven sites and scripting languages.
Programming • More tools than you will ever use. • All the Microsoft tools.
Reference • As opposed to OnLine Information Services. • These are stand-alone applications installed here. • Encyclopedias, cataloging tools. • Check out MS Researcher.
Networks • The lab machines are all connected together through a Local Area Network (LAN) • This allows computers to communicate to each other, and to a common location • You will mainly deal with the G drive and your account space on Dante
G: Drive • The G drive: is really space on a separate computer called a server • It enables you to read and write files from any computer in the lab • You can also access the G: drive from home, via ftp, but cannot save documents back to the G: drive (Read Only) • ftp://ischoolftp:let!me!in@ischool.washington.edu/
UW Student File Space • Dante is similar to the g: drive, but offers more than read-only access • Dante is both your UW storage space AND your e-mail server. • You will learn more about your file space on Dante in sessions 3 and 4
Other users with accounts and passwords Mac Classic IBM Compatible Laptop computer Remote CPU (Dante) Your account directory UW NetID:________ Password :_________ Memory Your UW Account Keyboard Input Output Monitor CPU Muse Memory Local storage space
Exercise: Create Your Directory • Split up into groups (follow instructor lead) • Double click on (G:) drive on fileserve • Go into Group folder for your group number
Next Step • Select File • …New • …Folder
Name the Folder • Notice the highlighted box • Type your UW Net_ID (less likely to clash) • Congrats! You successfully created a file folder on the G: drive
Exercise: Move a Folder • Move your personal folder (currently a sub folder) from inside the group folders to the main directory on the G: drive • Launch Explorer (several choices of how) • Find your directory • Click on your folder • Drag it over into the g drive root directory • Your folder should disappear from Group_* and appear in the main directory
Remember: You Can’t Break a Computer! • Very difficult to break – • Deleting system files • Drop kick and defenestration work pretty well • Basic troubleshooting • “Hard reboot” solves most problems: use Start, shutdown menu • If machine frozen, can use control/alt/delete or power off without shutdown • Always power down through the shutdown menu if you can
Other Sources of Help • Online help • Lab Assistants • Fellow students • Handouts • Web (google, yahoo) • Support websites (support.microsoft.com) • iTech List Serve www.ischool.washington.edu/technology/subscribe.htm www.ischool.washington.edu/technology/bootcamp/
