  3. Education • Education – providing students with a broad range of knowledge on a variety of topics to allow them to make decisions toward a successful outcome for different situations and circumstances. • This is what you go to school to learn.

  4. Communication • Communication is providing people with information on a specific topic or topics without regard of outcome • This is the 6 O'clock news

  5. Training • Training is teaching a student to perform a specific task in a pre-determined way so that they perform it the same way every time. • Dialing your mother on your cellphone

  7. Project Goals • Why are we doing this • What business need/requirement does it fulfill

  8. Training Scope • What will the students be able to accomplish upon completion. • Scope must be well defined BEFORE the project starts. • Scope creep leads to cost and time overruns delaying the overall project delivery • Scope helps determine the overall learning objectives

Learning Objectives • A learning objective is: • A collection of words and/or pictures and diagrams intended to let others know what you intend for your students to achieve • It is related to intended outcomes, NOT the process for achieving the outcomes • It is specific and measurable, rather than broad and intangible • It is concerned with the students not the teachers

  10. Learning Objectives • Learning Objectives have 3 characteristics that answer 3 questions • What should the learner be able to DO? • Under what conditions do you want the learner to be able to do it? • How well must it be done?

  11. Learning Objective - Example • At the end of this topic on performing a Quality Control Check on a Completed Case Report form the learner should be able to: • Identify all errors in the form using the the Case Report Form Completion guidelines with a 100% accuracy.

SME Definition • A subject matter expert (SME) is a colleague or contractor • who demonstrates an understanding of the business impact and knowledge of the processes, requirements (including appropriate regulations), systems, and/or activities relating to a given project • An SME is chosen to represent his/her line, division,

SME • SMEs • Contribute their expertise, best practices, and knowledge; • Serve as a global spokesperson for respective line; • Are empowered to raise issues to senior management, support new activities, and make decisions; • Are responsible for communicating with respective functional lines or business lines; • Are to ensure current practices, processes, and systems are considered in decision-making; • Provide review and input on deliverables of the project (including training materials); • Are responsible for consolidating input from respective lines; and • Are responsible for offering input on how to implement the project in the business environment (eg, how best to train lines on process changes).

Pros and Cons - WBT • Pros • Available 24/7 • Goes at pace of student • Reusable • Simulations are “safe” for students • No instructors required • Updates are automatic and global • May also be used as interactive “help” • Cons • No instructor • Not all audiences comfortable with WBT • Costs more in money and time to develop • Not customizable to audience on the fly

Pros and Cons - ILT • Pros • Instructor can tailor message to class • Learner/Instructor interaction • Peer interaction • Familiar environment • Multimedia may be incorporated • Cons • Restricted to time/place • Travel costs • Loss of productivity • Scheduling of students • 20% miss class • Everyone goes at same pace • Inconsistent message with multiple instructors • Can require training databases which must be maintained (cost associated)

  24. Cost • Web Based Training costs more than Instructor Led initially. • WBT has a 3 to 1 compression ratio (1 hour of WBT = 3 hours of ILT) • Research • Overall costs depends on • Training duration • Complexity of training • Amount of materials to develop • Technical needs

Issues • Time target delivery date • Is the software ready? –We can’t build training on “Vaporware.” • Some parts of the training development on new applications cannot begin until the environment is stable, i.e. no changes that will significantly affect screen shots. • SME selection and input • If SME’s don’t do their job we can’t do ours • SMEs should have the project in their goals
