Seminar Seminar # 1, Dec 06 Feedback “What can I take home from the seminar?“ • interesting, but too theoretical • How can I use this knowledge in the classroom
Seminar Seminar # 1, Dec 06 Conclusions to be drawn • self-reflection, but no practical output • guest teachers who lived many years abroad (!) • have experienced exactly those problems which had been discussed (!) • high level of education(!) • teaching routine (!)
Seminar Seminar # 1, Dec 06 Conclusions to be drawn • Concept: training vs. education • “You cannot argue with the box office!“
Seminar # 2, Mar 07 • intercultural competence – learning process • knowledge of the foreign language and international operation does not automatically imply intercultural competence • how can we support this process in the framework of teaching a foreign language • importance of one‘s own culturally determined values, behaviour and ways of thinking
Seminar Seminar # 2, Mar 07 Feedback “What can I take home from the seminar?“ • awareness about one´s own interpretations, • awareness about one´s own selective observation, • importance of communication, • importance of one´s own expectations, • more tolerance, • less prejudice towards s.o./fewer stereotypes
Seminar Seminar # 2, Mar 07 Why was feedback more positive on Sem # 2 • Mixture of theory vs practise • Teacher inter-action (question and answers) • Emotional involvement (picture-interpretation)
Seminar # 2, Mar 07 What to teach • life and institutions • history • geography • do‘s and dont‘s
Seminar # 2, Mar 07 • Picture – Interpretation

Seminar # 2, Mar 07 Aim of picture interpretation • Observe • Interpret • Evaluate • .....Stop! Interpret through own cultural glasses..as do others....see world through „learned patterns...need to but hard to „unlearn“ the patterns
Seminar # 2, Mar 07 Conclusions to be drawn • Apart from relevant information (geographical, historical,…) • Teachers were unaware of the importance of their and their pupils‘ own culturally determined values, behaviour and ways of thinking (!)
Seminar # 2, Mar 07 Knowledge gained from teachers • Curiousity for the possibility of IC in language training • Need to stress the diff IC Factual vs IC awareness skills • Need for training to develop inert IC skills ( reflective exercises like just shown..) • Training for „newcomers“ to develop IC skills • Supply of ref.books, exercises for classroom work
Experiments in the classroom • Pres. Topic IC..concepts , theories , models.cross-cultural vs intercultural (Hofst vs Jacquier) • Exercises to show learned pattern..and how difficult to „unlearn“ • Pres. Bennet Model: Discussion/ Mindsets • Related to Islam Demo in Vienna with samples from internet discussion (authentic source material)
Role of language teacher in future • Culture is manifested in language • Still to present „facts and figures“ of language...also of social , politcal and culture of country ( tendency to frontal training) ... • ...IC teacher main role is that..“coach/ trainer and moderator“
… and finally … an American businessman‘s guide to survival in Vienna: KISS AS MANY HANDS AS POSSIBLE AND CALL EVERYBODY DOCTOR!
