  2. “It takes a village to raise a child” and a community to most naturally learn a language. • We learn language best through human interaction. • We need opportunities to practice what we learn. • We need motivation to learn more: communication with people we care about.

  4. Learning happens at all of these levels. How can we create experiences that maximize the impact of limited classroom instruction? Home and Community Experience School Experience Classroom Instruction

  5. Create naturalistic practice opportunities, connections with other subjects of learning and motivation to learn while providing an integrated social, emotional and cultural education. Greeting and conversing with other students and staff Using French in the Cafeteria and at recess School Experience Possible uses of my time: -Naturalistic interaction with students between classes and during lunch and recess -Supporting other content area teachers with French lessons designed to reinforce their content objectives -Organizing the efforts of others to maximize student learning hours Using French to spice up the learning of other subjects Practicing basic French classroom instructions in a variety of classroom settings

  6. Maximize student learning hours while creating naturalistic practice opportunities, and the development of social skills and cultural understanding. Enjoying speaking French with community members at a potluck or performing in a concert or play Singing along to a recording of French songs custom created to support our classroom curriculum Home and Community Experience Possible uses of my time: -Create custom audio/video materials to maximize learning hours at home and in the community -Organize community events promoting the use of French and understanding of francophone culture and history -Create relationships with schools and communities in Quebec and France Reviewing lessons at home with family assisted by interactive video materials Listening to an audio CD in the car or at home to master accurate pronunciation Writing a letter to a French speaking pen pal

  7. The Big Question: When we think in terms of maximizing student learning hours and enhancing the quality of the learning experience, how may I best direct my instructional efforts?
