4. HRSA Grant Trainings Hospitals trainings were conducted so as to develop a regional hospital response system. Approximately 36 meetings are conducted each Grant Year FY to address systems planning between hospitals and partners, surge capacity issues, communications, interoperability, technical decontamination procedures and the Strategic National Stockpile. 90 – 95% of all 209 hospitals actively participated in these Rounds.

5. HRSA Grant Trainings In Grant Year FY 03 – 04, 36 trainings targeted to hospitals will also be conducted. Isolation capacity, surge, deployment and credentialing of medical personnel are just some of the issues identified by the grant to be addressed. The Strategic National Stockpile and Hurricane Sheltering is the major component of these rounds.

6. CDC & HRSA Hospital Grant Table-Top Exercises: The full day agenda tested the ability of hospitals, public health, law enforcement, EMS, OEP, and other emergency responders to communicate effectively to biological or chemical disasters.

7. CDC & HRSA Hospital Grant Community Drills: The full-day agenda tested the application of developed plans by hospitals, public health, law enforcement, EMS, OEP and other emergency responders at staged events.

8. PROFESSIONAL COURSES A total of 10 Medical Awareness Courses was facilitated in 9 Regions of the state. The full-day agenda was directed specifically to physicians, nurses, pharmacists and lab professionals to increase their goal of increasing the level of awareness for differential diagnosing of potential terrorism agents and/or potential disease outbreaks. Major Initiative: Trauma System (LERN System) • Formation of a Trauma Commission by Executive Order • Recommendations of the Trauma Task Force: • Pre-hospital care and access must be more integrated with the total health care system. • Enhanced communications among all members of the trauma care team is essential and will speed the deployment of resources, produce more appropriate triaging and result in enhanced patient outcomes. • A system of interrelated trauma centers based on public and private medical facilities located in geographically advantageous regions throughout Louisiana is critical. Currently, there are two Level 1 trauma centers in the state, one in New Orleans, the other in Shreveport.
