    1. Romans 8-10

    2. Review Chapter 1- All men are without excuse when it comes to the things of God, because creation itself cries out that God exists. The Gospel is salvation for all-the Jew first and then the gentile. Men from old have perverted the truth and decided to worship the creation instead of the creator and God gave them over to their passions.

    3. Chapter 2 Paul points out that the very people that are picking at the gentile converts for not keeping the law of God properly do not even keep it themselves. He says that the gentiles do a better job of keeping the law not even having it than the Jews who actually have it! (2:14) Then makes the point that they are more righteous before God because they actually walk the walk versus just talking the talk.

    4. Chapter 3 He starts off by saying that the Jew has the advantage because they were given the instructions of God to live by. Then he says that the ground at the base of the cross is level. No one is better than another. We are all under sin. He then refutes the false notion that you can be saved by circumcision or the keeping of the Law of God. (3:19) Then tells us that the purpose of the Law is to define sin (3:20) and that salvation can only be found through faith (3:28) and cannot be earned through works. We established that Paul did not say that the Law of God was set up so that people could earn their salvation through being good enough. Salvation has always been earned through faith. And the righteousness that came from the Law was made up by man and is called boasting.

    5. Then, just to make it clear to anyone that would accuse Paul of saying that the Law of God is bad, he states rather emphatically, “31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

    6. Chapter 4 In this chapter Paul points out that Abraham himself was a gentile before he was circumcised and before his encounter with God. And that the promise of all of his seed being saved was given to him BEFORE he was circumcised. He points this fact out to prove that the Gentiles have the right to become children of God as well. Then he states again that salvation can only come through FAITH in God through His Word, which is Jesus Christ the Messiah.

    7. Chapter 5 The reason why all of creation is fallen is because of the sin of one man that caused all man to be born with the “sin gene” But the “Good News” is that through the obedience of one man, ALL are made clean that believe in what He did on the cross.

    8. Chapter 6 Because of the Messiah taking our place and paying for Adam’s sin (and thus the whole world through Adam), we are no longer under the penalty of sin and are now FREE from it (vs. 7) We are commanded to live as such instruments that are FREE and not allow are members to be slaves to sin. (vs. 13)

    9. We learned that there are 3 different laws mentioned in scripture: The Law of God The law of sin and death The law of the religious leaders (Oral Law)

    10. We learned that when vs. 14 says “…for you are no longer under the law, but under grace. That it means we are no longer under the law of sin and death and Paul is not telling us that God’s law is now void. For he already said in 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

    11. We established that “under the law” can mean just being subject to the laws of that land, or it can mean that you are under the penalty of the law because you have broken it. Most of the time it is the latter that Paul is talking about. We also found out that the Law of God can only define sin and pronounce blessing or curses. It is a matter of fact and cannot make exceptions because only the one that is the judge can do that.

    12. We learned that when Paul says in 6:23 that “the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ”, that what he is really saying in context is that “the penalty for breaking the law of God is death (as you Jews have correctly pointed out and have tried to explain to these gentiles. But you have not understood one thing): But, “the FREE gift of salvation can be received through faith in Jesus Christ.

    13. Chapter 7 Paul says that we are dead to the “law” and it no longer has authority over us. Some people have interpreted this verse to be saying that we are no longer responsible to God’s law. But in fact we learned that what he is really saying is that we are no longer under the penalty of it if we are dead. And because when Christ died, we died. So, in a spiritual sense, it can no longer pronounce judgment over us. It “has no authority” over us any longer to condemn us.

    14. Then Paul says that once he was alive without the law and then when he read the law, he died. Paul was never without the law as he grew up with it. He is stating the fact that all these years he thought that he was alive, but when he read the law through the eyes of his newly regenerated spirit, it was as if it was the first time and he realized that all this time he was relying on his religious activities to save him and now he saw for the first time that he was “dead” in his sins and was in need of a savior.

    15. The rest of the chapter reveals the emotions and struggles of Paul in his everyday life as a believer doing the things that he hates and not doing the things that he should do. He ends the chapter by saying that God’s law is a delight to him and is spiritual. That he wants to keep it in his mind, but his sinful nature keeps getting in the way keeping him from obeying the Law of God.

    16. Chapter 8 Then, as if he hasn’t made it clear enough already, he states again that no one can keep the law perfectly and everyone deserves death, but because of Christ “There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus because 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

    17. And that brings us to where we are this week.

    18. 1 ¶ Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin (Not man) in sinful man, 4 in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit. 5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.

    19. 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. 9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10 ¶ But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.

    20. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. 12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

    21. 17 ¶ Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. 18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

    22. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. 26 ¶ In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. (When does the spirit intercede for us?) 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.

    23. 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

    24. 29 ¶ For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. Who did he foreknew? Those who love God, from the previous verse. He marked all those that would love God with the power to be conformed to the image of his Son. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. 31 ¶ What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

    25. 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered." 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    26. Romans 9 1 ¶ I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it in the Holy Spirit— 2 I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race, 4 the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. 5 Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, for ever praised! Amen.

    27. 6 ¶ It is not as though God’s word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. 7 Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned." 8 In other words, it is not the natural children who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring. 9 For this was how the promise was stated: "At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son." 10 Not only that, but Rebekah’s children had one and the same father, our father Isaac. 11 Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad—in order that God’s purpose in election might stand: 12 not by works but by him who calls—she was told, "The older will serve the younger." 13 Just as it is written: "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated (or “set aside”)”

    28. 14 ¶ What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! 15 For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." 16 It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: "I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth." 18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden. 19 One of you will say to me: "Then why does God still blame us? For who resists his will?" 20 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’" 21 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?

    29. 22 What if God, choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath— prepared for destruction? 23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory— 24 even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles? 25 ¶ As he says in Hosea: "I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people; and I will call her ‘my loved one’ who is not my loved one," 26 and, "It will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ they will be called ‘sons of the living God’.“ Paul is still trying to prove that the Gentiles were prophesied to part of God’s chosen people and should be accepted as so. 27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: "Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved. 28 For the Lord will carry out his sentence on earth with speed and finality."

    30. 29 It is just as Isaiah said previously: "Unless the Lord Almighty had left us descendants, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah." 30 ¶ What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; 31 but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it. 32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the "stumbling-stone". 33 As it is written: "See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."

    31. Romans 10 1 ¶ Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

    32. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. When is righteousness imputed to a person? At what point does someone become in a “right” state with YHVH? When he “believes”. What does “believe” mean? Hebrew is “aman”, which means to “support, confirm, carry out, establish, to be faithful and obey”

    33. When did Abraham Become Righteous? Ro 4:3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

    34. In the Hebrew mind, the way you “Act” IS what you “believe”. There is no such thing as “intellectual belief”. There is no separation between what you “believe” and what you do, because what you do IS what you believe!

    35. So, Abraham was made righteous because he “believed” God. BUT…his righteousness was not credited to him because he just said “ok God, you want me to pack up my whole family and move to somewhere that your not going to tell me or even give me a map of how to get there. I’ll go along with that. I’ll get back to ya.” It was when he PACKED UP ALL OF HIS THINGS AND MOVED! THAT is when he was credited to be righteous. His belief was “confirmed” through his action.

    36. BY FAITH Righteousness has always been by faith and PROVEN through your works. Jas 2:22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? Jas 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

    37. So, if righteousness comes through faith, then how could it have ever been given through the law? When was Abraham credited again? When he did what God told him to do.

    38. There IS a righteousness that Comes from the Law of God. Ro 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Ro 10:5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.

    39. LIFE came to those that obeyed the commandments of God. But it still required the people to BELIEVE YHVH at His word and their motive had to be that they were doing those things just because they loved Him and not for any selfish gain.

    40. Righteousness comes from believing God at His Word. And His Word became flesh (John 1:14) and dwelt among us. So, NOW when Jesus says that he who loves the Father loves the Son in whom He sent, you must “believe” the Father when He says he sent him for the purpose of paying for the sin of Adam (all of mankind) and accepting the punishment that the Law of God demanding for his creation breaking it. Yeshua kept the Law perfectly and fulfilled all of the righteous requirements of the Law to a “T”.

    41. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. So, no longer can righteousness be gained from JUST obeying the Law because the Father added a commandment, so to speak: You must believe in My Son in order to be saved because if you don’t believe in Him you do not believe ME. So, keeping the Law today for the believer is only because we love Him, understanding that our perfect righteousness that God requires can only be found in the perfect One who took the penalty and became righteousness for us. Now that someone has kept all of the requirements of the law perfectly, we no longer have to rely on our own acts, if you will, to please God because there is no one that is righteous, not even one, as scripture says. It is the righteousness of Jesus that we trust in. And so from this perspective, the Messiah has put an end to righteousness being attained through believing in His Word through keeping His commandments. Righteousness is found now through believing that Jesus is the Son of God that did what you could not do.

    42. Million Dollar Question Does faith in Christ mean that we do not have to keep God’s Law anymore? 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

    43. 5 Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming:

    44. 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 ¶ For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

    45. 14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!" 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our report?" 17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 18 But I say, have they not heard? Yes indeed: "Their sound has gone out to all the earth, And their words to the ends of the world." 19 But I say, did Israel not know? First Moses says: "I will provoke you to jealousy by those who are not a nation, I will move you to anger by a foolish nation." 20 But Isaiah is very bold and says: "I was found by those who did not seek Me; I was made manifest to those who did not ask for Me." 21 But to Israel he says: "All day long I have stretched out My hands To a disobedient and contrary people."

    46. 1 ¶ I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying, 3 "LORD, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life"? 4 But what does the divine response say to him? "I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal." 5 Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

    47. 6 And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work. 7 What then? Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were blinded. 8 Just as it is written: "God has given them a spirit of stupor, Eyes that they should not see And ears that they should not hear, To this very day." 9 And David says: "Let their table become a snare and a trap, A stumbling block and a recompense to them. 10 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see, and bow down their back always." 11 I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. 12 Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness!

    48. 12 Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness! 13 For I speak to you Gentiles; inasmuch as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, 14 if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh and save some of them. 15 For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? 16 For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. 17 And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, 18 do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.

    49. 19 You will say then, "Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in." 20 Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either. 22 Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. 23 And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, who are natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?

    50. 25 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; 27 For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins." 28 Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. 29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30 For as you were once disobedient to God, yet have now obtained mercy through their disobedience, 31 even so these also have now been disobedient, that through the mercy shown you they also may obtain mercy. 32 For God has committed them all to disobedience, that He might have mercy on all.

    51. 33 ¶ Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! 34 "For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become His counselor?" 35 "Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?" 36 For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.

    52. Romans 12:1-2 1 ¶ I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
