  1. The Radicals take control • Radicals are EXTREME • Want to change France even more! • Demanded a republic • A France WITHOUT a King! The Sans-Culottes • Inflamed by their povertyand hatred of wealth • Demanded CHANGE. NOW! • Used violence!

  2. Radicals declare war on….everyone! • Wanted to end tyranny in France and other nations in Europe • Declared war on Austria, Prussia, and Britain • Declared war on themselves • Wanted everyone to support the radical changes! • Read Republic of Virtue

  3. Monarchy abolished • Debate brews about what to do with King • Radicals want king to be executed in order to build a new France • King put on trial for treason and executed • Marie Antoinette executed too! • Radical Terror now spreads throughout France!

  4. An New Radical Government Emerges • National Convention is a new radical government • Wants universal suffrage (voting) for all men • Convention is challenged by several European nations that threaten to invade • Convention gives power to new group • Committee of Public Safety

  5. The Committee of Public Safety • Led by Maximilien Robespierre • Prepared a huge army to defend France • Purged France of everyone who did NOT support the radical revolution • How- The ideas in the Republic of Virtue

  6. The Reign of Terror • Anyone who did not the support the revolution was arrested • Many put to death by new invention • The Guillontine • an enlightenment execution machine! • 20-40,000 dead

  7. The Terror Ends • Too many people were executed • 50,000-80,000 people died • Robespierre was executed along with many other radicals • Represented end of the radical revolution
