Absolute Monarchy Predict: Based on these pictures, how do you think an Absolute Monarch rules a nation?
Absolute Monarchy • Power is held by a king or queen • There are no limits on his/her power • Power is achieved through heredity • A person must be born into the position • There is no citizen participation
Constitutional Monarchy • Power is held by a king/queen AND a Legislative Branch • Powers are limited by a Constitution and Laws • The royal position is based on heredity; members of the Legislature are either elected by the people or appointed by the king/queen • There is some citizen participation
Constitutional Monarchy • This document is called The Magna Carta • Does anyone remember why it is important? (hint: think back to early U.S. history)
Parliamentary Democracy • Power is held by the people • Powers are limited by the Constitution and Laws • Holding Power: the Legislature is elected by the people • The Prime Minister is elected by the Legislature • There is a high level of citizen participation, but the people are removed from choosing the leader (P.M.)

Theocracy • Power is held by the religious leader • Powers are limited by the laws of the religion • A leader is appointed to power or elected by religious leaders • There is a low level of citizen participation, except for people with leadership positions within the religious organization
