Authority and Unity John 11-Acts 1
What does this mean for us? And he [the Father] has given him [Jesus] authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 5:27 (ESV) Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 14:10 (ESV) If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. 7:17 (ESV) I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” 15:5 (ESV) The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. 7:18 (ESV) When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 16:13 (ESV) So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. 8:28 (ESV) For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. 12:49 (ESV)
Unity • A simple idea with profound implications • Jesus and the Father are one (John 14:8,11) • Jesus and the Spirit have the same purpose (16:12-15) • Jesus desires to be one with the apostles and those that come after them (17:20-23) • God wants to be one with us!
Other Points • Even sickness can glorify God (John 11:4) • Jesus showed compassion even when He knew things would get better (11:35) • Jesus was solely focused on His mission (11:15 & 11:42) • Jesus turns the regular concept of authority - being served - backwards (13:1-20) • Jesus is the true demonstration of love (14:34, Romans 5:7) • Jesus is the source of our peace and (spiritual) prosperity (14:27 & 15:1-11)
Other Points • There are no excuses for sin once you know what’s right (15:22) • Watch out that being right in little points isn’t overshadowed by obvious sins (18:28, Matt 23:23) • Purpose for John’s book (and the Bible as a whole): that we may believe and have life in His name (20:30-31) • If others have good things or bad things happen, what is that to us (other than to rejoice or weep with them)? (21:22) • Be careful of making too much of scripture - the “if”s are important (21:23)
