Fifth European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL 2010) Sustaining TEL: From Innovation to Learning and Practice Barcelona (Spain), 28 September-1 October 2010 A Tool for Instructional Recommendation in e-Learning This research is granted by Vietnam National University-Hochiminh city Research Fund under Project no. B2009-18-01TD for two years (2009-2011), project link: www.umel.edu.vn. An-Te NGUYEN, Bich-Thuy DONG THI, Duc-Long LE Workshop (WS1) - Future Learning Landscapes Towards the Convergence of Pervasive Computing, Social Media and Semantic Web in Technology Enhanced Learning Environments 2nd Edition Sep, 2010
MOODLE Traditional learning & e-Learning Online learning (e-Learning) e-Learning courses Traditional courses • Online learning is more effective than face-to-face learning; • Online learning combined with some face-to-face learning (blended/hybrid learning) is the most effective; • Face-to-face learning alone is the least effective method among the three types studied. (Means et al. 2009) BLACKCT face-to-face learning • Technology-enhanced Learning: supporting learning in 21st century. • All in terms of “Web is things”, or “Internet is things”… Technology is not enough to make successful e-Learning!
Instructional design for e-Learning is necessary ! • Literature on use of Instructional Design (ID) for e-Learning • Referred to the systematic approach, and using ISD model • End result: efficient and effective instruction (pedagogical strategy), regardless of who are teaching. (Kanuka, 2006) • Almost in form “one size fits all” “At it best, e-Learning is as good as the best classroom learning. And at its worst, it is as bad as the worst classroom learning. The difference is design.” (Horton, 2006) Situation of Instructional Design : past and present • Pedagogical strategy is effective– but it is not sure of engaging • Need of existing a learning environment that is effective and engaging(Broderich, 2001)
How is e-Learning design ? HOW DO WE HAVE A PEDAGOGICAL STRATEGY THAT IS EFFECTIVE AND ENGAGING WITH LEARNING ENVIRONMENT?
Need to combine Technology and Pedagogy in design required • Technology “Science” of design • Approach: Ambient Intelligence paradigm • Environment: Web + on-line services • Context-aware: using profile to recognize learner and community • Personalized: recommending learner to meet her demands based on learning communities • Adaptive: implicit and explicit feedback to updating profile • Learning content: completeness and logicality • Learning Activities: almost the same as in traditional form • Pedagogy “Art” of design • Engaging learner with learning contents: appropriateness • Engaging learner with instructor: attraction and ergonomics • Engaging learner with group learning: suitability
Main Principle: LEARNER is able to study in collaborative environment – but learning supports satisfy her own demands and individual characteristics Way of our approach … Technique: e-Learning 2.0 + Personalized System
Conclusions To sum up, the outstanding features of our work are mainly: Building user profile for e-Learning and applying in distance training program of Vietnam Higher Education context with the useful information, and especially basing on analysis of learning process to update user profile, and Focusing on two levels of adaptation in e-Learning system: (1) private adaptation (interaction between learner and system), and (2) community adaptation (collaborative activities between learners in a group learning or a community). We are continuing to complete the proposed model of user profile and group profile, and then using both of them in UMeL tool with real-life datum from distance training program of HCMC University of Science. This research is granted by Vietnam National University-Hochiminh city Research Fund under Project no. B2009-18-01TD for two years (2009-2011), project link: www.umel.edu.vn. The tool will be integrated to demonstrate with the portal (APS 2.5) for distance training program of HCMc University of Natural Science, Vietnam, available at http://www.e-learning.vn/KHTN/Pages/Home.aspx.
That’s all. Thank you for listening ! Sep, 2010
